Album Review

Explosions In The Sky – All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone

This Texan four piece band have been wowing listeners for years with music that truly captures emotion and beauty. Armed with two guitars, a bass and a drum kit, Explosions In The Sky have produced album after album of sheer bliss that will spark emotion in even the most stone hearted of people. A close comparison would be the Icelandic band Sigur Ros. After their track was used on the advert for a BBC program Planet Earth, they elevated themselves to master status of a band that brought a completely different sound to music.

Whilst the two bands are pretty similar, it is important to note that EITS do not have any lyrics. The music does all the talking as the band takes you through a musical journey of ranging emotion. From calmness, anger, confusion and happiness it’s all their to create an album of total bliss and warmth.

EITS haven’t generated much media attention before, but they receive press with their second album, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever, due to rumors linking it to the September 11, 2001 attacks.. The album art shows an airplane with the caption "This plane will crash tomorrow." There were false reports that the last track was called "This Plane Will Crash Tomorrow" and that the album was released on September 10, 2001, the concept had actually originated in 2000, and the album was released on August 27, 2001.

All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone is the fourth album from the band, and it is the first time that a slight experimentation with their sound has happened. Prior to this release a tour only EP featured speech and piano. The added addition of piano has worked its way on to this album and only makes the sound of the band stronger and more accessible to wider audiences. This doesn’t slot in to the album until halfway through, but the delicate guitar chords are used to create a dream like soundscape that could easily be a soundtrack to a bedtime snooze.

The track Catastrophe And The Cure is only the real time that a bit more anger and emotion have been put in to a song. The stabbing guitars and pounding drums don’t cast the typical illusion of a gentle head rocking song that is familiar with this band. However, the aggressiveness quickly dies away and turns in to a more progressive ambient offering as it seamlessly turns in to the following track on the album So Long Lonesome.

Six tracks may seem like a very short number for an album, but the length makes up for the apparent number of songs. As each song is constantly shifting pace and evolving in to something else, it is another outstanding release from a band that can’t seem to do any wrong.
