Liverpool can spearhead the Premier League’s affirmation of European pre-eminence

Liverpool have had a tumultuous season. A decent start was undermined by inconsistent team selections and unrest off the pitch regarding the running of the club by its American owners. The consequence has been a lacklustre domestic campaign that promised much but has failed to deliver the title challenge expected. Stephen Gerrard has made no secret of his disappointment with the clubs league position but insists that, in Europe, Liverpool have a great chance to reach the final of the Champions League for the third time in four years.

“In Europe we are a force. We don’t fear anyone”. He said. “We have great experience in Europe, we have been there and we know what it is all about. I don’t want to say who we want to play and who we don’t but I think we can let the rest worry about us, because we have got the pedigree in this competition”.

This season’s tournament has already claimed a number of colossal victims. Inter Milan, the current leaders of Serie A, were the latest scalp of a Liverpool team that, since being beaten by Barnsley in the FA Cup last month, has found a new lease of life. Rafa Benitez’s team has won the last six games, scoring an impressive sixteen goals in the process. Few would debate that the key factors in this turnaround have been the form of Fernando Torres and the partnership he has fostered with Gerrard.

Torres’ 64th minute strike saw off Internazionale, leading to their captain, Patrick Viera, applauding the quality and spirit of the Premier League side. The victory, however, owed as much to Liverpool’s resilience and discipline than to flashes of brilliance from Torres. From Mascherano’s harrying in midfield to last gasp interceptions by Hypia, Liverpool displayed the desire required to progress to the latter stages of the competition. A dismissal in both legs did not assist Inter’s plight but the Italian side can have few complaints.

Today the draw for the quarter-finals of the Champions League takes place in Nyon in Switzerland. The Big Four are due to line up together for the first time in the tournaments history. Considering the form and consistency Liverpool are currently showing, paddypower’s price of 11 - 2 to win the tournament outright seems rather generous. One thing is for sure, for all their inadequacies in the league, Liverpool are a team to avoid in Europe.

Yes, Liverpool will probably win the CL again. They always manage to spoil things by being successfull even when they're rubbish. LOL. Never mind though as the best team always wins the League.

Just a shame Chelsea had to end the dream.

The owners of Liverpool have a lot to answer for though.
