Oh! Bar Review
Jazz Blow at the Oh! Bar, 111 Camden High Street, NW1 7JK. 4th Thursday of every month. Live music/DJ featured. 020 7383 0330
Jazz Blow, presented to you by Panache Artistes, is a relatively new phenomenon at the Oh! Bar. However, it already seems to be attracting a lot of attention, which is impressive in area saturated with bars for the Hip and Cool.
The Oh! Bar itself is essentially a pub, complete with chatty bar staff, numerous tables, red leather sofas, a pool table, a curious variety ofa rmchairs, tea lights in glasses and quiz machine featuring favourites such as Deal Or No Deal. At least, this is the impression you get when you first walk inside. However, continue towards the back of the venue and there are still a few sofas and tables, but also the small, lit stage where live acts perform.
The night we went, The Hamish Balfour Quartet was performing with singers ChiChi and Maya Love. They gave us suitably soulful covers of Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You” and “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess. The vocalists’ voices soared as they showed off remarkable range, imbuing each note with emotion appropiate to each word. The cellist managed to compliment the singing with subtle plucks of the strings, while the keyboard work was mesmerising, especially during the instrumentals. The attentive, mostly standing crowd reflected the talent and imagination on show in noisy the level of its appreciation after each number.
Making our way back through the bar and into the bitter fresh air, we saw that only the electric sign gives a hint of the jazzy, secret exploits inside this not-so-typical Camden pub.
