Props to Pilates
Joseph Pilates developed the pilates method as a way to help rehabilitate soldiers that were injured during the First World War. Today, Pilates is increasingly gaining popularity in the UK as more and more people discover its amazing benefits.
Pilates is a series of exercises and movements that are specifically aimed at strengthening the core muscles. Core muscles are the muscles that are implicated in keeping your body aligned and stable. While pilates is a full body work-out, abdominal, back and shoulder muscles are especially targeted.
There are plenty of good reasons to give pilates a twirl. For one thing, it’ll increase your body awareness: you’ll automatically find yourself sitting up straighter and sucking in that tummy when you’re brushing your teeth or driving your car. Improving the posture and creating longer, suppler muscles, pilates will help you to appear taller and to move more gracefully.
Are you bored of your monotonous gym routine? Pilates is to the standard abdominal crunch what Jamie Oliver is to the Caesar salad. If your sessions are feeling like a sleepy slogathon, then the diversity of pilates exercises could be for you. Pilates is versatile: a host of specialised pilates equipment is available to diversify workouts, but for the minimalist, a comfy mat is all that is required.
Since the core muscles are the basis of all movement, Pilates is an excellent adjunct to other sports. If you are a passionate footballer, swimmer or martial artist, pilates would help boost general strength and control.
Last but not least, pilates is also an excellent way to release mental stress. A good pilates workout will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed, ready to tackle the rest of the day.
