Mark Ronson - Version Album Review
In hindsight I can see I had a bit of a love affair with the new Mark Ronson CD- being all excited, not getting enough of it, thinking it’s the best thing since sliced bread, blinded of its flaws. I was oh so very keen to get my hands on Ronsons latest….and my keenness amplified at the sight of the £7 sticker plastered over marks lovely face. I got that disk in my player as soon as I got home – and away from my sceptical boyfriend- (probably just jealous of my new found love for the little disc). The preliminary gush of excitement, hearing a well loved favourite song transformed into a dancey hit or regenerated by a new voice. Every track is a great reworked cover or version of songs like Lily Allen’s solo version of Kaiser chief hit. My firm favourite is track 9 – ‘Just’ Catchy upbeat Phantom Planet version of Radiohead (which sounded too slow in comparison). However, I’ve now had the album a week and my relationship with the CD is already in question. To be honest I’m getting a bit bored of these covers. When I think about it- is it not a bit of a shame that all such a talented producer/DJ has to offer is a mere album of covers which, quite frankly is a bit of a fad that I’m starting to think won’t last too well in the long run. However, covers (done well) are popular (think about all those ‘BBC live lounge albums that keep getting churned out) and not to mention that covers are also FUN (according to some of us anyway). So. Maybe he has got it right, or maybe the songs he plays with are just so good in the first place he can’t go wrong and Ronson has little contribution to the funky new version? Whatever one it turns out to be, I am feeling maybe my short affair is over.
