Anyone else on here a fan of any of the Takashi Miike films? Anyone else a big horror fan who enjoys a cheap movie with loads of gore?
I'm a big fan of alot of the extreme Asian movies. Ichi The Killer, Gozu, The Audition and the like. I like the whole idea of Miike's movie's. Films like Gozu can leave you completely bewildered and thinking. Thought is the greatest thing a great movie can trigger. The weirder the movie the more awesome the thought is.
So, does any else fancy a scary Asian film or a low-grade horror flick? :) |

| About the closest I've been able to get to asian horror films is the Japenese originals of The Ring films, which were bloody scary/good I have to say. :) I liked the Hollywood remake, but it's not a patch on the originals. |

The US version of The Ring was good! :P *Especially the start!* Narf! I won't give owt away for people that haven't seen it yet but the last 30 mins or so certainly are great! But I'm not here to talk about that now! :D
Sci Fi channel showed Battle Royale last week, so hearing it was somewhat of a cult Japanese classic, I taped it. First thing I must say is it's controversial as Hell!
In the near future it seems every school kid in Japan has been anti-authority hardcore scallies and 95% boycott school or run around in it stabbing teachers. So the adults and teachers have enough. What do they do? Issue crufews? Get some decent teachers in? Frisk students? More grants towards schools?
Nooo! There's only way to settle it it seems! Send a class of kids to a desert island every year and have them hunt each other down until there's 1 left, who is the re-introduced (slightly disturbed I suspect) back into society as the 'game's' winner.
Of course! Why didn't I think of that?!
The film is the story of one class of 42 that are drugged and taken to said island to participate in this Battle Royale of the title. Feeling controvercial yet? Don't worry, you will!
What follows is nearly 2 hours of 42 schoolkids butchering each other basically. Each gets a backpack containing a weapon (ranging from a shotgun to a bin lid, in one of the film's many humourous moments). Some group up and hide, some go mental with a crossbow and axe, but virtually all end up turning on each other in fits of hysteria.
It's not overly gory (thankfully!) but there are some pretty gruesome scenes (I for one will never be able to look at a farmer's psythe in quite the same light again :D). There's some good acting (at least for your average Japanese film :)), though I did feel slightly odd when in 3 days of being on the island only 2 people ever tried to get a cease fire. :)
And I certainly doubt I'd have attacked people within 4 minutes of being bullied and told basically by my former teacher that I've gotta kill all my classmates. :) The students have these weird devices on their necks that blow up if they dissobey some order, thus forcing them to partcipate a bit more, but still. :)
Overall it was half a film about mindless killing and the need to survive and half about teenage angst. I'm glad they touched on the emotional parts (quite a few of the students are friends or partners, and I always like watching sane people go mad, a la Aliens :D), as I doubt even my bloody-thirsty self could've tolerated 2 hours of nothing but kids finding new uses fo kitchen knives and bin lids. :)
I'd give it 8/10, it was a bit quirky in places (Hell, the whole idea is odd!) and the backstory wasn't fully explained. But then that's not what the film is about, it's about kids going on an emotional rollercoaster ride of the usual teen angst, accelerated somewhat by having to run from a mad man with an uzi. :D
Great popcorn fodder, but I'll warn ya: the idea alone isn't a pleasant one. :) |

Hehe, the American version has a few nasty scenes (why they had to do close-ups of victims I'll never know!) but it's not really scary.
Though there's a bit where you see the girl coming through the telly, she doesn't look that menacing really but for some reason that scene always makes my spine tingle. :D |
