Album Review: The Long Blondes - Someone to Drive You Home
So the fight continues for the crown of Sheffield music scene, it’s neck and neck at the moment. In one corner you have the Arctic Monkeys who give snap shots of reality at it’s grimmest but at the same time bring bouncy dancing shoes to the table.
In the other corner you have the Long Blondes who offer reality, fun and --- here comes the winning punch --- a solution to life’s problems: that times will change if you make them change.
Here you have 12 songs that are crammed with some of the most exciting hooks of the year, on top of that bitter sweet catty lyrics which make debut album, Someone to Drive You Home, a gateway to everyone’s inner diva.
Front woman Kate Jackson is definitely the new pinup for both boys and girls alike and with lyrics like “I will show you the ropes.” and “Nineteen, you're only nineteen for god's sake/you don't need a boyfriend” only make us wish she’d arrived sooner.
The shocking thing is that most of the songs lyrics are written by the bands male guitarist Dorian Cox, but in the end it doesn’t matter because Jackson is the perfect mouth piece for his lyrics, where does he get such insight one wonders?
This album is full of memorable singles, “Weekend Without Makeup” gives you a glimpse of what its like to live without any fun, and “Giddy Stratospheres” is the pinnacle of losing yourself through music: with it’s sky high melody, and weeping lyric “She’ll never take you to Giddy Stratospheres that come from your fears”.
Even the most poignant moments such as “Heaven Help The New Girl” seem to fly by with hope.
Keeping with current times might be difficult, but Someone to Drive You Home spells it out very clearly, this is the type of music that should be given to teenagers as a crash course on how to survive those difficult teen years, the Long Blondes make it look easy and exciting to be young and lost.
