Album Review: Kayne West - Graduation
Graduation is the album where Kanye West re-invents himself.
There’s still a few glimpses of his old self, those also happen to be songs you are most likely to listen to instead of skip, then run and try to find where the original is because you want to check out where he got that sample from.
But in a way it is his most fun album to date--- you know the one you end up listening to just before you go out on Saturday night to the club. In that respect you have to hand it to him he’s come up with one of the best ‘going out’ albums that’s been released in a while. And the cool part is that it’s also got a coming down quality to it: “I Wonder’ has an outstanding sample of Labi Siffre’s “My Song” which leaves you breathless in the emotion it achieves, and ‘Homecoming’, which has Chris Martin giving a hand on vocals and putting that warm, gentle voice of his to good use, reassuring us that things are going to be alright when he comes home, and makes us a better person.
Just kidding.
Kanye’s lyrics are still very funny, they’ve lost a little of his deepness but that’s okay, things are going good, and it’s time for a breather. You can tell that at moment the royalty cheques are rolling in, just listen to “Champion” and it’s lyrics “I shop so much I can speak Italian”, and it’s head turning Steely Dan sample, you just know it’s shopping time in the West household.
His lyrics reflect what is going on at the best night spot’s in Florida, and New York;
What it’s like to be at some of the most expensive clothing stores picking out your ‘flash”.
He isn’t selfish about it though, he makes us feel as good as he’s feeling on the track “Good Life”, that’s T Pain on vocals.
It has been a busy year for West though, first there was his statement that he considered himself important enough to be included in an updated version of the Bible (true story).
Then there’s been the Grammy Award wins, and to top it off he gets sued by Evel" Knievel—a bit surreal there.
Even 50 Cent wants to get a piece of West by starting the rap crown battle in promotion to his own album Curtis which came out the same day as Graduation.
Kanye won.
Does that make Kanye West the biggest rap superstar at the moment?
You better believe it, he has brought into the main stream ‘Soul Beats’ which has gone on to inspire countless other rappers from Lupe Fiasco, to Danny-- a return to funny, clever lyrics that deal with different subjects other than cars, and girls, and an Ali like confidence which is inspiring.
Plus has there ever been a rapper who has performed for a royal family lately?
