Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
This is the second album from a Canadian band whose profile is yet to match its talent and imagination.
Even though Neon Bible has yet to take hold of me in the same way Funeral did, I’m confident that the more I listen to it, the more in awe I’ll be.
“Black Mirror” (track 1) sets the scene for the whole album, with a taunting lilt to it, helped along by guest harpist Liza Ray.
On this track as on all the others, an extensive orchestra is again at its best, backing up the band that itself is not small. Strings and brass glide seamlessly along, binding well with Win Butler and Regine Chassange’s sublimely harmonized vocals. This album is more downbeat than the first, with the majority of songs written in minor key, there is a solemn subtlety about it.
This is also reflected in the lyrics. The title track, “Neon Bible” (track 3) takes a pessimistic and cynical look at the Scriptures whilst “Intervention” (track 4) is sung to someone living a stale life, neglecting even their own family as they go through the motions. “(Antichrist Television Blues)”. (track 8) is a prayer to God motivated by desperation and helpless rather than by faith and love.
Whilst this album has so far failed to take me by storm, its enough to keep me hanging on for the next one.
