Madonna-Confessions on a Dancefloor
Confessions on a Dancefloor is the Queen of Pop’s attempt at becoming Queen of the clubs. Around the time of release, Madonna commented that it was her desire to take over the dancefloors with this baby.
An album I bought myself as a birthday treat, it got me whirling around in delight just as every birthday girl should.
Madonna stays true to her mainstream roots in “Hung Up” (track 1) sampling pop icons Abba to create a tune that soars melodically at all the right moments.
The music for the rest of the album is just as entertaining, continuing the use of eclectic influences which made Ray of Light such a breathtaking comeback. The fact that the tempo is a little faster than Madonna fans are used just adds to the fun.
The lyrics are also great fun, with Madonna’s devil-may-care humour balanced perfectly with her defiant independence. “I love New York” (track 5) does exactly what it says on the tin. This ode to the great city is enhanced by the jokey petulance that underpins the put-downs delivered to inferior cities. “Jump” (track 8) is all about what Madonna does best-taking risks and leaping into the unknown. “Push” (track 11) is an inspiring, catchy song about equally challenged and supported by someone who knows full well that you just want to have a cry, but who also knows that you’re better than that.
For the comedown, there are more trance-inspired, serious tunes like “Let It Will Be” (track 6) and “Forbidden Love” (track 7), but my personal taste would have preferred the crazy tempo and lyrics to have been maintained throughout.
Though Madonna hardly won over the hardcore dance crowd with this, it still proves that she is the Queen of Cheekiness, leotard or no leotard.
