RICHARD ASHCROFT- KEYS TO THE WORLD

Richard Ashcroft used to be the lead singer in the Britpop band ‘The Verve ‘which had some amazing songs including ‘Bittersweet Symphony’. The band is no more, but Richard has been busy making solo albums including ‘Keys To The World’.

The man is a musical genius for although he did not study music formally, has great song-writing skills. Richard writes lyrics that are poetic and have depth. ‘Break The Night With Colour’ is a fine example as the title itself is highly visual and creative. This track shows disenchantment with the world for Richard’s lyrics state ’Nothing’s going right today/’Cos nothing ever does’ and also the phrase ‘The corridors of discontent’. The song is sung intensely and the chorus is delivered with anguish.

‘Music Is Power’ was released as a single which did reasonably well. It’s a cheerful, up-lifting song and Richard is accompanied by orchestral strings. ‘Keys To The World’ has strong backing vocals which are reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s track ‘Great Gig In The Sky’.

‘Why Do Lovers?’ is a deeply-emotional track which Richard sings plaintively. When he sings there’s a certainty that he is singing from the heart and the depths of his soul. ‘World Keeps Turning’ is the final track on the album and Richard sounds a lot like Bob Dylan here vocally. It’s quite thick textured as lots of instruments are used to great effect, particularly the electric guitar. Overall, it’s an outstanding album.
