Goldie Lookin’ Chain are a rap group from Newport in South Wales, when I first heard them I burst out laughing, because of their humorous and sometimes explicit lyrics. Many of their songs contain reference to places and hang-outs local to Newport.
Much of the humour comes from the adoption of hip-hop style and language, adapted into the local South Wales vocabularly, partly to poke fun at petty criminals who identify with hip-hop cliches. Their music also ridicules gangsta rappers by highlighting how petty crime culture sounds ridiculous when not surrounded by media hype and glamour usually associated with gangsta rap.
Even as comedians they have managed to pull it off. They have been signed to a major label, played Glastonbury and Reading, and received ecstatic press coverage. They should therefore be judged as a proper band.
I for one really like them, they are at the stage in my musical tastes at the moment as The Darkness were when they first hit the scene they are easy to listen to and a bit of fun…it will be interesting to see how things pan out for these guys!
