'No woman, no cry' who can forget those famous words song from Bob Marley and the wailers mouths!
Bob Marley was born 6th febuary 1945 in a small village called Nine Miles in Jamaica. His father was a white British Naval Officer named Norval Marley.
Bob had very little recollection of his father, this is because the Marley family did not approve of the relationship his father had with his mother.
Bob Marley cut his first record at the mere age of 16 in Kingston called 'Judge Not'.
In 1963 the original Wailers formed with the lineup as Bob Marley, Bunny Livingstone and Peter Tosh.
Their first single 'Simmer down' was a instant hit in Jamaica.
In 1966 Haile Sellasie visited Jamaica and Bob and the other Wailers embraced the Rastafarian faith and began to grow their 'locks' (lol). During this time, the group met Lee Perry a producer who later sold their material (without them knowing) to another label.
In 1972 Chris Blackwell signed the Wailers to his 'Island' label and gave them $800 to produce an record. 'Catch a Fire' was a huge breakthrough album triggering international recogintion.
The touring was too much for Bunny Livingstone so he left the wailers with Peter Tosh following not far ebhind to start a solo career.
A new wailers group emerged with Bob being the frontman of Bob Marley and the Wailers (with his wife Rita also doing vocals in the group).
In 1975 Bob Marley and the Wailers played the Roxy in Los Angeles. Among the ectstatic audience (apparently some were dancing on the tables) were Beatles George and Ringo, Bob Dylan, and Jack Nicholson!
Back home in Jamaica Bob was being referred to as a mystic and a prophet his influence was noted by politicians. When Bob approached the then Prime Minister Michael Manley offering to stage a free concert he responded by fixing a date (5 December) that would conveniently coincide with the national elections, thus implying that he had the support of Bob Marley. This dangerous move resulted in an attempt on Bobs life. On the evening of the 3 December a number of gunmen arrived at Bobs house on Hope Road and shot Bob, his wife Rita, and his manager. These gunmen were thought to be the henchmen of the opposition leader Edward Seaga. Fortunately, nobody was killed, and Bob went ahead with the planned concert defiantly appearing with his arm in a sling. (Now that is dedication, if only Ross had it)
The following year Bob cancelled the last few dates of a big european tour when doctors diagnosed melanoma cancer in the big toe of his right foot caused as a result of a untreated football injury(football being Bobs other major passion alongside music) which occured in Paris when the Wailers took on a team of French journalists some time earlier.
In 1979 Bob introduced Reggae music to the world, touring Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
In septmber of this same year, Bob collapsed while jogging in Central Park (New York) just after playing a world tour.
Bob heard some dreaded news that his cancer which had meant to be cleared had returned and was present in his lungs and brain. Depsite this news he flew to his last concert in 1980 at Pittsburgs, Stanley Theatre.
Bob was treated in New York for cancer but eventually the doctors said there was nothing they could do.He then flew to Bavaria where he was treated by the unconventional Dr Issels. At first things were looking encouraging and for a while things looked like they were inproving but then the dreaded news came Dr Issels told him there was no longer any hope. :(
Bob wanted to spend his last days in Jamaica but was so ill he ended up in Miami (en route)
Bob Marley died in Miami in 11 may 1981.
His body was specially returned to Jamaica where it was placed in a specially constructed mausoleum at his birthplace, Nine Miles. (And ive been there)
Why am I writing these sad review things!?
Anyway I highly recommend for you folks to listen to any of Bob Marleys albums. They are so intense and amazing!! It makes you feel so chilled out. I recommend you taking this album out with you when you sit at the beach or when its just you and your buddies chilling out on the beach.
Bob Marley and The Wailers wrote these song themselves and each song means something that has happened to them or something that they care about!
'I shot the sheriff' is a classic by Bob Marley along with 'No woman, No cry' (also covered by the fugees' ).
Bob Marley just makes you want to sit there and think about life and what hes actually singing about and is there a meaning behind the lyrics.
This artiist is 100% and is loved by everyone of all ages worlwide, you can listen to this album wherever and whenever! |
