Since signing with Columbia, the Offspring have been called sell-outs and leeches. But front man Dexter Holland and guitarist Noodles say they're just taking' care of business. Their latest album, Splinter, shows that the proof is in the pudding.
They have released 7 albums, each one different from the last and maturing as a band as they go. Dexter Holland, the front man, has an amazing voice and the lead guitarist, nicknamed Noodles, is an expert in the field of inspirational guitar riffs. One of the leading bands of punk in this day and age.
They began in 1984, Bryan Dexter Holland and Greg Kriesel were best friends on the high school cross country team. They decided to go see a Social Distortion concert, when they couldn't get in, they decided to form their own band called Manic Subsidal. Then, they needed a drummer and a guitarist as well. That's when Dexter was introduced to Noodles (Kevin Wasserman) who happened to be the high school's janitor at the time. They then had James Lilja as the drummer. After a little while, it didn't work out with James, and that's when Dexter got introduced to drummer, Ron Welty in 1986. This is when the name of The Offspring was formed.
5 albums later when Conspiracy Of One didn’t sell well I wasn’t really hoping for much when Splinter came out, but I was pleasantly surprised! I mean I am a big Offspring fan but their previous album kind of let me down in a way and the bottom line is that this CD contains everything I was expecting, and then some. The Southern California punks are back, and with a purpose, with session drummer Josh Freese filling in for departed Welty.
My favorite track on the album is The Worst Hangover Ever – Great song. The title tells the lyrics. It’s about a guy who got wasted the previous night, and is telling the story of the next morning. He offers some resolution at the end…“I'll probably never drink again/I may not ever drink again/At least not ‘til next weekend. Funny Song kind of reminds me….of me.
The band has just got back from touring in Australia, Japan, South Korea and Thailand on the Splinter Tour. They also graced the Reading Festival goers with an awesome set and soon they’ll be off to Europe for 12 shows and will play South Africa for the first time ever.
With this year being their 10 year anniversary, they are still going strong, hopefully they will carry on producing classic albums like Splinter and will be around fo a further 10 years!
