When the Red Hot Chili Peppers first burst onto the music scene wearing nothing but neon paint and socks on their knobs, no one really thought they would still be going on strong some 20 years later!
But they are and they keep gracing us with their amazing albums like the four-times platinum Californication and their recent album By The Way. None of their albums ever ceases to prove the amazing talents of the ultimate king of slap and pop, Flea, and the six-string wonder John Frusciante. John's exploding abilities take the Chili Peppers to new places like the flamenco folk-hop of Cabron and the punchy ska of On Mercury.
They haven't totally severed their ties with their Freaky Styley past - the nostalgic neck-snapping workout of Throw Away Your Television, along with the slow-rolling Can't Stop, should satisfy the faithful fans for now.
I was lucky enough to see them play one of their one-off gigs at Hyde Park in London - I was one of 80,000 people that saw one of the most outstanding gigs I have ever seen. It just goes to prove that the Red Hot Chili Peppers today define themselves by what they were once, and how they're not like that any more. Not wasted, not stupid, and, remarkably, not uncool either.
