What is it about a song that makes it special, what is the little sparkle that gives it staying power? Every year worldwide, thousands of records are released.

How many come and go, briefly recognised? Some disappear completely into the abyss. The world of music is constantly changing and evolving, so many genres and sub genres now exist that even i, as a teenager do not always stay afloat of the latest musical movement.

Of course we all have our own favourite song or songs, but consider this. Your favourite song may have been recorded originally as a pop song. Later on it may have been recorded again by another pop artist, or possibly it crossed the divide and become a more rock, head banging version. Do you still like it?

A song that i consider to have crossed the times and tides with grace is "Don't Leave Me This Way."

Originally recorded by the wonderfully soulful, Harold Melvin and the Blue notes. At just over six minutes long, this track was powerful, at times tear - inducing and thought - provoking. It was released in the Seventies and fitted the era with justice.

It has since been remixed by Bronski Beat, Thelma Huston and Gerard Joling to name just a few. Bronski Beat and Gerard Joling have turned the track into more of a dance number, catchy yet still with the qualities that the original version held so well. Bronski Beat made the version slightly longer at almost six and a half minutes. But i believe this is six and a half minutes of good quality music. Although a dance version it holds true to Harold Melvin and compliments the lyrics with a lively and fitting musical composition. Thelma Huston while being slightly more upbeat has managed to retain the soulfulness of the song and once again brought it to life even being just under half the length of the original. Her version was used on the "Miss Congeniality 2" soundtrack which has opened up a classical song to a new younger audience.

Remixing songs can lead to the danger of repetition and i don't believe a song should be re - released multiple times. However if a track can be improved on, in the sense of keeping it in with the times to keep it alive and to keep giving out tip top tunes, then continue on, and don't let songs, "leave you this way."
