Recently in NYC, heavyweights Samuel Peter and James Toney made a special appearance at the Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Center to talk about their highly anticipated rematch, which takes place Saturday in Miami.
I got a chance to speak to both men, and I questioned them about their training methods, as well as their strategy for the rematch.
When Toney walked into the room, the smell of Filet Mignon hit his food-finder instantly. But Toney was unruffled and simply talked about how we will see an improved James Toney. His promoter, Dan Goossen, said “I think we filled in the blanks. We hired Billy Blanks as his new conditioning coach”. Yes, Tae-Bo Billy Blanks. But Toney didn’t look any skinnier, what gives? Goossen responded:
“He’ll never look like an Arnold Schwarzenegger, that’s not his body. What Blanks wants to do is get Toney in supreme condition to throw the most amount of punches every round”
Peter looked like he didn’t skip any meals in preparation for this match. His vest was secured with metal locks so his belly wouldn’t burst out. In a short roundtable discussion, Samuel told me that he felt very strongly about proving to the world that beating Toney the first time wasn’t any fluke. He was so confident about his original strategy that he plans on making no changes. He said that Toney has been fighting the same way for many years, and doesn’t think he can change anything to make a difference. Since he beat Toney the first time and his strategy worked, the only thing Peter really expects is a better-conditioned Toney, but the outcome will be the same.
I like Toney’s strategy, and I think that’s the answer. The first fight was very close, but most felt Toney pulled it out. I did too, but it was a close fight. The problem with Toney in recent years is that he gets hit too much and doesn’t throw enough punches. If Toney can double his punch output and slip a few more punches, I think he cruises to a unanimous decision. My prediction is Toney by split decision in another close fight. WagerWeb.com has Toney -110, with Peter at -120.
