I will most prob get shot down for this, but anyhow ........

I grew up in a gneration where our parents gave us a smack if we did not listen, and I did the same to my kids when they were naughty. It never did us any harm and generally the kids were far more well behaved and they showed respect. They also used the cane in schools and there was no nonsense. The kids had respect for the teachers.

In my opinion, one only has to look around and see how disrespectful kids are today since they have banned the cane and stopped parents from smacking kids. I DONT mean that kids must be brutally bashed though, but a good hiding never did me or my kids any harm.

There could be a generation divide here where the older members say spare the rod and spoil the child, while the younger ones would say, a good short sharp shock equals a day in court

Its hard as a nursery nurse (not saying that I would ever smack the children cos blatently I would never do that) but most of the children hardly ever listen to me when they are asked to something or when they are doing something wrong, I have to nearly shout (your only allowed to raise your voices) but something does need to be done to make these children listen more!

Hi eveyone

I am back from China and reading through the varying thoughts on dealing with children I would like to add my penny's worth.

I do not believe in smacking children but something has to be done to not only slow down todays behaviour but correct it. Smacking only works for a short period of time before it becomes 'so what she/he is only going to hit me if I don't do as I am told'. We need to take away something from the child that really means a a consequence whilst instilling respect and consideration for others.

Yeah right China that makes Gran Canaria sound pretty lame!

Anyway yeah children are becoming more and more disobediant (major spelling mistake there! But I have been awake for the last 28 hours so forgive me!) they seem to be becoming intolerant of rules and just generally being told what to do! I am not sure why this is as i am not a parent and i have no idea what it is like to bring up a child but mabe the way it is changing and the more lenient it is becoming is having an adverse effect on society itself? just a really tired in dept thought there!...sorry if i sound stupid!
