THOUGHT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED FRIENDS--
KENNETH

HOW MUSIC COLOURED MY EARLY LIFE
When I was 8 years old, my Mam and Dad decided It was time I went to music lessons, as many people did in those days.... (1942)

My Dad already had an 8 piece dance band called "Jimmy Beattie`s Waverley Dance Band". The band played all over the North East of England, but mainly in South Tyneside at dance venues.

I have a very treasured possession.....it is the little banner that was hung on the wall at the side of the stage of where ever the band were playing.

There is also a little story to the banner.........the lady who embroidered it thought my Dad`s name was JIM--E--BEATTIE, Instead of what it was JIMMY BEATTIE.

After a few months of music lessons I got bored with doing scales.... simply because by I was 8 years old. I could pick a tune up from the radio and while I couldn't play the left hand, I got better and better at playing the melody of a number of songs that I liked. I complained to Mam that the nights were dark now and it was a mile walk to my music teacher's house. Anyway, I got out of the lessons... (which I have lived to regret).

My Dad became interested in my progress at being able to pick out a tune from the radio, then sit at the piano and play the melody. He began to show me how to play the accompanyment with my left hand to suit the chord changes that the song required. So this is how my musical life began. I know the notes on a music score, but cannot read quick enough to play from the sheet music.

My very first public appearance was for a church dance. It was a smallish hall and there I was on stage by all myself. There was about 50 young people in the hall and once the dancing got under way I was in my element! I was very nervous for the first 20 minutes, but my inner confidence grew. What I did not know was that when I left home to go to the hall, Mam and Dad after wishing me luck and waving me goodbye, had followed me to the dance hall. They did not go into the hall itself, but just pushed the main door ajar enough to listen to their son playing his musical debut.......

I formed my first trio when I was 16, having already been playing with Dad`s band on a number of occasions. That's another thing...playing with Dad. This meant I had to play all the music in THE KEY IT WAS WRITTEN IN....this was huge practice for me, which paid off handsomely later in my musical career.

There was lots of girlfriends over those early years and my trio used to invited them to large private houses after midnight on a New Year's Eve....with taxis provided to take us home early in the morning.

After years of playing his heart out, my Dad died. I didn't play another note for 12 months after that. Then one day someone told me there was a big club looking for an organist 3 nights a week, Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 8.00pm until 11.00 pm, for £60 per week. I went for the audition. It was a pianist, not an organist, they were looking for. There were three of us applying for the work. We all agreed to play for one night each for nothing. Then the entertainment committee would decide who to choose. I played the first night, another chap played the second night and the third guy never turned up. I later got a phone call asking if I would fill in for him. Anyway, I got the work.

After the first three nights, I called on the following Monday at the club. I asked the MC about the rumour that they owned a big Hammond organ complete with huge Lesley speaker in one of the side rooms not being played.

He showed me, and straight away I thought, never mind the piano.. this HAMMOND is the Bees Knees! So I played the Hammond in the concert room for nearly 4 years. I enjoyed every minute of those years.

When my late wife, Maude, became extremely ill with arthritis, I had to look after her 24 hours a day, so I stopped playing in public altogether.

Maude was my second wife. We were married in March 1987 and she was 14 years my senior, but a very great lady.

In 1990 I bought myself a decent YAMAHA Keyboard and enjoy making my own recorded tapes. This developed into recording my own CDs. On this site I have presented a few of my recordings and I hope you enjoy them.

Music! There is nothing quite like it.....
