Iron Leg - Mickey & The Soul Generation

A band almost completely unheard of until the hugely talented DJ Shadow unearthed them from the rubble of musical waste, Iron Leg is the spirit of 60’s/ 70’s summer funk. Re-mastered by Shadow’s label ‘Quannum Projects,’ every song is unique, drenched in sunshine and drizzled with a light soul dressing that is akin to the bright works of Booker T and the M.Gs and Pop Staples. Personal favourites include, ‘Southern Fried Funk,’ ‘Hey, Brother Man, and ‘UFO,’ purely for its transcendental silvery space sound. This album would provide the perfect soundtrack for one of those sepia toned KFC-style adverts where a group of friends are laughing and having a good time in slow motion, all sporting some sort of crazy afro and gleaming teeth. I hope every musician who helped create this album felt privileged that they were working with such skilled colleagues, as every one of them brings forth a wealth of imagination that gives the instruments a freedom to live and breathe as they wish. From the electric organ to the squealing guitar, the random solos and chaos gives the impression that this formula would be too messy but it’s a controlled craziness that identifies the beauty of this album; The messiness amplified by the raw, unpolished sound of the instruments is what constitutes to the natural sound, not hemmed in by conscious thought or over production that tends to sanitize emotion.
In conclusion, next time the sun’s bursting, dust off your deckchair, grab yourself a cold drink and chill out with the coolest accessory around, this album!
