Saving Private Ryan
Actors: Tom Hanks; Tom Sizemore; Edward Burns; Giovanni Ribisi; Barry Pepper; Vin Diesel; Matt Damon; Dale Dye; Jeremy Davies; Dennis Farina; Harve Presnell; Adam Goldberg; Ted Danson; Leland Orser; John de Lancie.
Year: 1998
Review: Seen through the eyes of a squad of American soldiers, the story begins with the famous World World 2 D-Day invasion. As they move beyond the beach, the men embark on a dangerous but special mission. Captain John Miller (played by Tom Hanks) must lead his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan. All three of his brothers were killed in combat (KIC) and they are more than eager to return him home to his mother so she does not lose all of her sons.
As they are faced with what seems like impossible odds, the squad start to question their mission. Afterall, why are eight men risking their lives to save just one man? Surrounded by the brutal, harsh and upsetting realities of war, each man searches for their own answer - and the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honour, decency and courage.
Will they find Private Ryan before it's too late?

I'm currently doing this as part of my last GCSE coursework piece, so I thought I'd post it on here and ask you guys if you've seen this movie before? If so, what do you think of it?
I think it's an awesome movie, which is why I decided to buy it yesterday. Even though it is somewhat gorey and disgusting, it just shows how cruel war actually is. Alot of people, including me, don't actually see the incredible battles that soldiers face during any war, and this movie really does open your eyes to it. Before I'd even watched this movie, I already had my own opinions on war. After seeing Saving Private Ryan it made me see just how lucky our country is (even though this is an american army squad) to have such couragous men (and women!) out there who would do the somewhat impossible task of fighting for our country and keeping us safe.
In between the battles during this film, we are exposed to each of the mens' emotions and feelings. Almost all of them break down crying at some stage (either during their break or even whilst they are fighting) and that is when the message of this movie suddenly hits home - war is cruel and takes lifes. At the end, I had tears in my eyes and, if I wasn't at school at the time of watching it, I'd have probably cried there and then!
If you haven't seen this movie, then don't be put off by the gore within it; it is a truly awesome film. Not just the way it was directed, but the way it was acted and scripted with such thought provoking scenes. I recommend it to everyone! :-) |

Aww, sounds awesome!
At the weekend, my grandparents were telling me all about life in the war and how great it felt when they found out it was over. I found it really interesting.. |

Me too. They looked really sad when they told me their stories, and it just made me feel so lucky that nothing ever happened to them during the war.
My Grandad was actually in the army when he was about 18 I think it was. He always tells me how cruel and hard it was, and they actually made the time longer just a few weeks before he was due to resign, so he had to suffer another 6 months of it.. |
