Found dead in his hotel room Wednesday morning (March 5).
Gene Pitney, the legend behind some of the biggest pop standards hits of the last century, has died while on tour in the UK.
One tour across the UK, the 65-year-old was pronounced dead this morning at 1000 BST in his hotel suite at the Hilton in Cardiff, and, according to reports, had showed no previous signs of illness. However, police are not treating his death as suspicious.
Tour manager James Kelly told Reuters he was with Pitney on Tuesday night, and was shocked to learn of his death. "I've never seen him so well, he said. "He was absolutely buzzing and full of life." Kelly added the star had been found fully clothed, laying atop the bed in a way as if he had lain down for a rest the same night after finishing the show.
Pitney had a cavalcade of hit records to hit name, his most recent highlight being 1989's "Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart", a No. 1 single recorded with Marc Almond. He also wrote hits for Roy Orbison and Bobby Vee (including the UK and US hit "Rubber Ball") before finding true international success with "24 Hours From Tulsa". |
