After hearing I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor on the radio and the fact that it made Number 1 within a few weeks of it being released I thought the Arctic Monkeys deserved a review on UKEvents.
The band formed in 2002, but were only just being recognized when their demos became available on the Net in 2004. Their appearances on the Carling Stage at the 2005 Reading and Leeds Festivals were hyped by much of the music press especially by the NME magazine and they received a rather large crowd at the events.
Their popularity rocketed following several shows which notably impressed many who went to them - the band played at a sold-out London Astoria, and 2000 fans sang the words to every song, despite the fact that the band had only released one record.
The band finished recording their debut album at a studio in Lincolnshire in September 2005. Its name was confirmed as Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not in early December, before its release date of 30 January 2006. It is widely expected to be one of the biggest releases of 2006, with thousands of copies already pre-ordered. However, many tracks were already freely available to download from the band's earlier demos. On the 5th of January 2006 it was announced that the release date for the album was to be brought forward a week to the 23rd of January. The reason given behind this was the high demand.
I am looking forward to the release of this album and will be purchasing it. I suggest you do the same or at least check the band out - I predict they will be huge.
