GEORGE Best lost his long battle for life to a shocking list of illnesses.

The soccer legend, 58, had "pneumonia, septicaemia, gastrointestinal bleeding and multi-organ failure".

A secondary cause was "immuno-suppression following liver transplant", his death certificate showed yesterday.

Alcoholic Best died last Friday at the private Cromwell Hospital in West London after an eight-week struggle.

Friend and agent Phil Hughes registered the death at nearby Kensington and Chelsea Register Office.

Doctor Akeel Alisa certified the death of the "retired footballer and sports journalist". His usual address was listed as Chelsea.

Mr Hughes will accompany the Man United and Northern Ireland hero's body on a flight to Belfast, Best's home town, on Friday.

Up to 500,000 fans are expected to watch Saturday's funeral cortege. After a private service at the family home at Cregagh, it will travel three miles to Stormont Castle for the funeral

Best's ex-wives Angie and Alex, lover Ros Hollidge, family and VIP guests will be at a service in the Great Hall. Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and ex-Northern Ireland stars Pat Jennings, Gerry Armstrong and Martin O'Neill are expected at a ceremony led by TV's Eamonn Holmes.

Singer Van Morrison hopes to perform. Belfast soloist Peter Corry, will sing Bring Him Home from Les Miserables. He said: "It's our Lady Diana funeral, it really is." Brian Kennedy, a second local singer, will perform Don McLean's Vincent.

Best's funeral will be only the second at Stormont since that of Lord Craigavon, Northern Ireland's first PM, in 1940. Organisers will limit Stormont crowds to 30,000 to prevent accidents on the waterlogged slopes.

Best will be buried by his mum Ann's grave at Belfast's Roselawn Cemetery.
