Individual Honours Football Writers' Player of the Year (1968)

George best was Born 22 May 1946. Belfast, Northern Ireland

With man utd, he scored 115 goals in 290 games - six of them in one game against Northampton Town in February 1970. He won two League Championships, the European Cup and was voted European Football of the Year in 1968. Pele named him as his favourite player, which was remarkable considering Best's international career with Northern Ireland never allowed him the opportunity of appearing in the World Cup finals.
He arrived at Manchester in 1961 aged 15 in the charge of sir matt busby.
He turned professional in 1963 and made his debut that autumn at home against West Bromwich Albion.
But he had turned his back on a top level career within nine years, retiring to a life of alcohol and indulgence at the tender age of 26.
Described as a "wayward genius", he had a superb sense of timing and balance,
He occupied a forward position in the team from 1963 to 1974, when an otherwise promising career was shortened due to controversial personal life, and his professional unreliability.
He seemed unable to cope with the pressures of super-stardom which his football skills had attracted. His career was dogged by scandal and he was constantly harassed by tabloid newspapers and the sensational reporting on his alleged womanising and drunkenness. Soon, his frequent late arrivals and failure to show for training sessions and declining fitness were to bring him into conflict with the Manchester United managers and in 1974 he was forced to leave the club.

He once famously said: "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.
George best today…
Best has had an alcohol problem for much of his adult life and underwent a liver transplant in 2002 after years of heavy drinking.
The 59-year-old, who has been in intensive care since October, and
Suffered internal bleeding and his condition was "as serious as it can get".
George started to recover only to have another infection and was put back in intensive care.
In between the infections he had. George had a photo taken to show people what alcohol abuse can do.
George died on the 25th nov 2005 at 1pm.
To me George was a great asset to football and was a great star, he was one of my hero’s and I for one will miss him.
Rest in peace George, you will be sadly missed.

They won 2-1 against West Ham.

Alex Ferguson is preparing for a poignant nite at Old Trafford tomorrow when Manchester United pay their respects to George Best.

United's Carling Cup fourth round clash with West Brom will be their first home game since Bestie died last Friday, aged 59.

Boss Fergie said "It will be an emotional nite. It will also be a very sad nite because Old Trafford was the platform he played on.

"It's been difficult because we had to make sure we represented such a great player properly. We had to give a lot of consideration to what we said but we will do it right."

Fergie will attend Best's funeral in Belfast on Saturday morning - but plans to be back in Manchester in time for United's 5.15pm clash with Portsmouth at Old Trafford.

Northern Ireland Sports Minister David Hanson has not ruled out naming a new stadium planned for Belfast after Bestie.

He said "People want to celebrate George's life in a positive way."
