Ashes hero Andrew Flintoff has admitted that he would 'jump at the chance' to captain England, despite current skipper Michael Vaughan suggesting that he might not be suitable.
Vaughan recently claimed that if the 27-year-old Lancashire all-rounder did take on the captaincy in addition to his batting and bowling responsibilities, Flintoff would find the additional workload 'overwhelming'.
But the man-of-the series against Australia this summer does not agree and told reporters: "I think everyone in the side has got aspirations of captaining their country, if it ever came up I'd jump at the chance."
Flintoff, who has dismissed claims of a rift with Vaughan, continued: "At the moment Vaughany is doing an unbelievable job, I'm enjoying playing under him and long may it continue but if - maybe a few years down the line - there was a chance then it's obviously something you'd have to be interested in.
"He was only saying what he thinks, I've known Michael for a few years and he would have my best interests at heart so it's not something that's going to bother me or upset me."
After playing a key role in helping England claim their first Test series victory over Australia in 18 years this summer, Flintoff is desperate for Vaughan's men to retain the Ashes urn when they travel Down Under next winter.
The Lancastrian, who also wants England to make an impact at the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the Carribbean, added: "I want to play in a Test side ranked number one in the world, which would mean retaining the Ashes next year.
"I want to win a World Cup, I've played in two and have not been through to the super-six stages yet. So the West Indies will be a big few months. I'm enjoying playing cricket with England and desperately want to play for the best side in the world."
England's Ashes triumph has taken Vaughan's men to within eight points of Australia at the top official world rankings and a seventh successive Test series victory in Pakistan before Christmas will help them make further inroads into the Aussies' advantage. |
