Argentina football legend Diego Maradona believes that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney can inspire England to lead the European challenge at next summer's World Cup finals in Germany.

Maradona, with whom 20-year-old Rooney has been compared, inspired Argentina to World Cup glory in Mexico in 1986, although it is his infamous 'Hand of God' quarter-final goal for which England fans will always remember him.

And the 44-year-old World Cup winner believes that Rooney's fiery temperament, which has been questioned in recent weeks, is a vital attribute which can help both him and England succeed.

Maradona is quoted as saying: "His temperament is a positive, not a negative. It will make him fight on the field and conquer adversity. You can't be a saint and still be successful in football. It's a tough, physical game and nobody gives you anything for free."

And of England's chances of being crowned world champions for the first time since 1966, he added: "For me, they have the best chance of all the European teams at next summer's World Cup finals in Germany."

Maradona, who flourished as a playmaker alongside a holding midfielder, also believes that England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson can accommodate both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in his midfield.

He said: "I don't see having two very talented central midfielders as a problem for England. Lampard and Gerrard are both exceptional, hard-working players who can take on different roles asked of them.

"It's down to the manager to tell them what he wants them to do. Good players can play anywhere."
