Snuka proud of current roster, anticipates RAW return
September 30, 2005
During RAW's Oct. 3 Homecoming on USA Network, WWE will pay tribute to many of the Legends who helped pave the way for all of WWE's future success. WWE.com will be posting interviews with many of these Legends as we recognize the vital role they played well before RAW ever became the landmark show of sports-entertainment.
Jimmy Snuka will be one of the legends on hand for WWE Homecoming. Long before aerial attacks became a common tactic, “Superfly awed audiences with his agility and soaring splashes from off the top turnbuckle. It was his immense popularity and revolutionary style that earned him a spot among the 1996 inductees to the WWE Hall of Fame. His well-documented splash from the top of a steel cage at Madison Square Garden against Don Muraco is one of the great WWE highlights of all time — influential enough to inspire a young Mick Foley to pursue a career in sports-entertainment.
Reached at home, Snuka reflected on his WWE career and playfully foreshadowed one possible encounter come his return to television on Oct. 3. When asked which fellow Legends Snuka was most looking forward to see, “Superfly coyly replied, “Definitely not Piper.
Snuka, of course, was making reference to a 1984 appearance on “Piper’s Pit, where the Rowdy One first mocked the Fiji Islands native with tropical fruit — then inexplicably blasted him in the brow with a coconut. In response, Snuka appeared in the corner of Hulk Hogan & Mr. T at the first-ever WrestleMania in a match against Piper & Paul Orndorff.
But Snuka simply sees that altercation with Piper as part of his WWE legacy, saying that he can’t wait to catch up with the stars of yesteryear. “I think it’s great that so many legends will be there. It’s fantastic, brother. I haven’t seen some of those guys in years.
Among the returning Legends will be "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan; Jimmy Hart; Hillbilly Jim; Superstar Billy Graham; Fabulous Moolah; Mae Young; Harley Race; Chief Jay Strongbow; Greg "The Hammer" Valentine; Nikolai Volkoff; Koko B. Ware; and the aforementioned “Rowdy Roddy Piper.
Snuka also wanted to take advantage of his return to RAW to meet with the current roster of Superstars. “I would just like to talk to them and tell them that I’m proud of what they’re doing, Snuka said. “(RAW’s Superstars) are carrying on their responsibilities and taking care of business.
Although Snuka’s stardom came long before sports-entertainment invaded Monday night programming, “Superfly is no stranger to RAW. In 2002, he even endured a Monday night run-in with RAW’s General Manger at a time when Bischoff was on quite a power trip. But he won’t hesitate for a moment to step back between the ropes. “Well, you know brother, RAW is big-time, Snuka said. “And I always look forward to those kind of things — especially since it’s WWE. It gives me great pleasure to be on nationwide TV again. I always look forward to being in front of the greatest fans in the world, brother.
Snuka was especially gratified to see WWE recognize Legends such as himself and use them more frequently in conjunction with the current television product. “Brother, that’s the best thing that brother Vinny (WWE Chairman Vince McMahon) could ever do. I think it’s great, and I’m glad that he thought it over because it’ll be good business for the company.
“You’re bringing back all the Legends; they’ll help out really strong. Because I’m sure a lot of the fans back from our days will be looking forward to WWE Homecoming also, and it’ll be a great thing for all the Legends. |
