Name: Randy Orton
Height: 6 foot 4
Weight: 245 pounds
From: St. Louis, Mo.
Finishing Move: RKO
Career Highlights: World Heavyweight Championship (defeated Chris Benoit at SummerSlam ’04); Intercontinental Championship
A genuine blue chipper - Randy Orton entered WWE and quickly joined up with the crème of the crop in the power-hungry faction on RAW known as Evolution. Mentored by “The Game Triple H and “The Nature Boy Ric Flair, Orton quickly turned from an up and coming third generation Superstar into the “Legend Killer. Feasting on crushing legend after legend, Orton targeted and took down dozens of top WWE Superstars, Hall of Famers and legends including Harley Race, Sgt. Slaughter, Shawn Michaels and Cactus Jack.
With a growing list of victims, courtesy of the nearly unstoppable RKO, Orton’s cockiness grew as did his threat as a top contender. In the summer of 2004, Orton got the chance of a lifetime in challenging Chris Benoit for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam. Orton’s victory over Benoit for the World Heavyweight Championship created chaos within Evolution as Triple H had all of Evolution turn on Orton and then stopped at nothing to make sure Orton’s reign as Champion was cut short.
Alienated but not unfocused, Orton waged war with Evolution but with WrestleMania approaching, Orton realized he needed to make a big impact. Orton did just that by challenging Undertaker – who is undefeated in 13 WrestleMania appearances - to a match at WrestleMania 21. Unfortunately, Orton felt as if everyone felt he could not defeat the Undertaker. Orton even felt betrayed by his girlfriend at the time, Stacy Keibler, who wasn’t supporting him going into Wrestlemania and RKO’d her. Fans instantly began to once again loathe the St. Louis native.
As WrestleMania approached, Orton’s aggressiveness and arrogance began to reemerge, as did his God’s Gift to the World attitude. As WrestleMania approached, Orton was featured on Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel when WWE legend Jake “The Snake Roberts made his first appearance in close to eight years in WWE by confronting Orton about his ways and warning him about Undertaker. Orton blew off Roberts’ warnings and advice and instead introduced him to an RKO, crossing another legend off his list of victims.
However, at WrestleMania 21 with Randy Orton’s ego and momentum at a near all-time high, his hot streak would be put on hold as Undertaker would just barely beat the young challenger after Orton came within milliseconds of defeating the Deadman… with a little help from his dear old dad Cowboy Bob Orton Jr. and his trusty cast. The next night, Orton went face to face with his former Evolution teammate and new World Heavyweight Champion Batista. Orton was injured and lost to a Batista Bomb.
Following the two big losses, Randy Orton was put on the disabled list due to a shoulder injury he suffered during his match against Undertaker at WrestleMania. However, despite these injuries, the cocky and confident heel Orton returned in a short period of time when he was drafted as part of the 2005 Draft Lottery to SmackDown!
Now a member of SmackDown!, Orton has set his eyes once again on Undertaker and adding him to his list of legends. At the 2005 SummerSlam with help from his Hall of Fame father, Randy Orton came one step closer to adding Undertaker’s name when he defeated the Dead Man in shocking conclusion to their second match. Determined to take down the Undertaker, Orton refuses to be denied his ascension once again to the top. |
