Name: Booker T
Height: 6 foot 3
Weight: 250 pounds
From: Houston
Finishing Move: Axe Kick, Book-End
Career Highlights: WWE United States Champion; World Tag Team Champion; 5-time WCW Champion; WCW Television Champion; WCW Tag Team Champion; Intercontinental Champion
Anyone ignorant enough to question the greatness of Booker T, should simply look at the numbers.
The former WCW star and current SmackDown! favorite has enjoyed 28 different championship reigns in his career, making him one of the most accomplished Superstars of all-time.
During his time at WCW, Booker T was a five-time WCW Champion, defeating the likes of Kevin Nash and Scott Steiner. Of course, his success as part of Harlem Heat is equally legendary. Along with brother Stevie Ray, Booker T was a 10-time WCW Tag Team Champion.
Harlem Heat defeated such teams as the Nasty Boys, The Steiners & Public Enemy.
Between 1997 and 1999, he was also the WCW Television Champion six times. During that time, Booker T established himself as a great wrestler. He especially showcased his skills in a famous best-of-seven series with Chris Benoit.
In fact, when WCW closed its doors in March of 2001, Booker T left the company as the World Champion and TV Champion before embarking on his WWE career.
When Booker T came to WWE as part of the WCW/ECW Alliance, he quickly established himself as one of its top Superstars. He even won his coveted WCW Tag Team Championship for a record 11th time when he teamed with Test in September of 2001.
A motivated Booker T wasted no time sending a message in WWE, attacking then WWE Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin during the main event of the 2001 King of the Ring. Ironically, Booker T was part of Team Austin at the 2003 Survivor Series.
In March of 2002, Booker T was originally drafted by RAW when WWE divided its two brands. In July of 2003, he would capture his most prestigious WWE championship to date, defeating Christian for the Intercontinental Championship at Bad Blood.
In March of 2004, Booker T was part of one of the most famous trades in WWE history when he was packaged with the Dudley Boys and sent to SmackDown! to re-acquire Triple H.
Originally, Booker T was furious with the trade, taking out his frustration on his opponents.
It took Booker T just four months to have a major impact on SmackDown!, defeating seven other Superstars to win the vacated United States Championship. Most recently, Booker T has found his niche on the roster, battling JBL for the WWE Championship in the main event at the 2004 Survivor Series and in a Fatal Fourway at Armageddon one month later.
In 2005, Booker T married longtime girlfriend and former Miss Black America Sharmell. Booker T welcomed the support of his wife, who quickly found trouble with a perverted Kurt Angle, forcing Booker T to protect his wife in various matches with Angle.
But once Angle was drafted to RAW, Booker T was back in pursuit of a world championship. |

Height: 6'3"
Weight: 250 lbs
Real Name: Bobby Huffman
DOB: 5/1/65
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Other Names: Kane (WCW), G.I. Bro (WCW)
Wrestler Since: 1989
Finishing Maneuvers: Harlem Hangover, Missile Dropkick, Axe Kick/Scissors Kick, the Bookend, the Ghetto Blaster
History: (Last Updated: 10/22/05)
The Beginning
Bobby Huffman, better known to the wrestling world as Booker T, has been a gold-winning marvel throughout his career, both with his brother Lance (Stevie Ray) and on his own. He and his brother began training together as wrestlers under Scott Casey, debuting in 1989 in the WWA, where they spent three prosperous years learning the ropes. It was during this time that Bobby supposedly had some problems with the law, as he was arrested for aiding in the robbery of a Wendy's that he had been working at. Fortunately for Bobby, things were worked out, as the brothers continued their wrestling career.
GWF
Bobby and Lance moved on to the Global Wrestling Federation in the early '90s, where they became known as the Ebony Experience. The duo quickly were successful, defeating Gary Young and Stevie Dane in July '92. They only held the belts for a week, though, before losing the gold to the Blackbirds (Action Jackson & King Parsons). The Ebony Experience returned a month later to reclaim the titles, then held them a little longer, before dropping them to Johnny Mantrell & Black Bart. Booker T then took some time off for a knee injury, while Stevie Ray won the GWF North American Title. When Booker T returned, the two continued their winning ways, defeating Bad Breed to become the first 3-time GWF Tag-Team Champions. After losing to the Sicilian Stallions 2 1/2 months later, Bobby & Lance decided to head for the big time.
WCW: 1993
As Kane and Kole, the brothers entered into World Championship Wrestling in 1993 as Chi-Town Heat. They wrestled for a brief period as mid-low carders, teaming with guys like Vader, Davey Boy Smith, and other superstars, but soon began making their way up in the organization. They entered their first WCW Pay-Per-View at Fall Brawl '93, as the mystery tag-team partners of Vader & Sid Vicious. Unfortunately, they were not well-received, both by the fans (who wanted to see the Road Warriors) and their opponents (Sting, Davey Boy Smith, Dustin Rhodes, & the Shockmaster), who promptly defeated them in the War Games match. Kane & Kole next teamed with the Equalizer at Halloween Havoc '93, but met with similar success, falling to Ice Train, Charlie Norris, & the Shockmaster.
1994
Going into the new year, Kane & Kole began changing their attitude, as well as their hometown, as they 'moved' from Chicago to New York, going from Chi-Town Heat to Harlem Heat. At Superbrawl '94, the team got its first big PPV victory, taking down Thunder & Lightning in the opening match thanks to Kane kicking Lightning in the head. However, with this victory, the team faded from view for a time, spending much of the rest of '94 building their image and skills up. Going into the Fall of '94, the two brothers reappeared on the scene, now known as Booker T & Stevie Ray of Harlem Heat. The duo started gaining momentum when they acquired Sister Sherri Martel as their manager, and finally began making their way up the tag-team division ladder.
The team began feuding with another major tag-team in the Nasty Boys, meeting several times in November and December. At Clash of the Champions XXIX, Harlem Heat got a huge victory over the Nasty Boys, with Stevie Ray pinning Jerry Sags, thanks in part to Sherri's interference. The two teams met again at Starrcade '94, with Sherri again playing a major role. This time, though, she wasn't on target, as she sprayed hairspray into Booker T's eyes by mistake. This allowed the Nasty Boys to take control, causing Sherri to come in and cause the DQ. By this time, Harlem Heat was on their way up, as they faced off against the WCW World Tag-Team Champions, Stars 'n' Stripes (Marcus Bagwell & the Patriot) at a TV Taping. With Sherri's assistance, Harlem Heat won the belts, becoming the top team in the company at the end of the year.
1995
Harlem Heat retained the belts in a title rematch against Stars 'n' Stripes at Clash of the Champions XXX, continuing their heelish ways. With Stars 'n' Stripes taken care of, Harlem Heat again focused on their nemeses, the Nasty Boys. The two teams feuded over much of the next year. At Superbrawl V, it appeared that the Nasty Boys had won away the Tag Titles, after Sherri accidentally knocked Booker T off the top rope, while Sags rolled up Stevie Ray. But a second referee correctly noticed that Booker T had gone over the top rope, which was illegal at the time in WCW, which gave Harlem Heat the DQ victory. The Nasty Boys got some revenge the next month, however, when they won a "Falls Count Anywhere" Match against Harlem Heat at Uncensored '95. The belts, however, were not on the line.
At Slamboree '95, Harlem Heat again faced the Nasty Boys, this time with the belts on the line for the last time, as it was announced that the Nasty Boys only had one more shot. Harlem Heat got the advantage early, as they had assaulted Brian Knobbs before the match, leaving Sags in a 2-on-1 situation. But, although Harlem Heat dominated, their arrogance allowed Sags back into the match, then things got worse, as Knobbs arrived, bandaged, from the back and got the tag. Soon after, Knobbs took out Booker T and pinned him to win away the WCW Tag Titles. Harlem Heat immediately wanted a rematch for the belts, but first had to deal with Col. Robert Parker's tag-team, Buckhouse Buck & d**k Slater. The two teams faced off at the '95 Great American Bash, with Sherri helping to reverse a small package to get Harlem Heat the victory.
Only a week later, in June '95, Harlem Heat defeated the Nasty Boys to become two-time WCW World Tag-Team Champs. This renewed the feud between the two teams, with another team, the Bluebloods (Steve Regal & Bobby Eaton) getting involved as well. At Bash At The Beach '95, the three teams faced off in a "Triple Threat" Match for the Tag Titles. Near the end, Regal was heavily splashed by most of the participants in the match. The ref made a count, and awarded the pin to Stevie Ray, giving Harlem Heat the win and allowing them to keep the belts. A confident Harlem Heat put the belts on the line again the following week. Unfortunately, thanks to the antics of Col. Robert Parker, they lost the belts to Bunkhouse Buck & d**k Slater.
This started a long-term feud between the two teams, as well as a love/hate relationship between Sherri and Parker. The two seemed to be forming a connection with each other, even as their two respective teams went at it. At Clash of the Champions XXXI, Harlem Heat & Sherri faced the tag champs & Parker in a "Six-Person" Tag, with the Heat winning out thanks to Sherri. Parker, nonetheless, kept trying to impress Sherri, and after Sherri took a bad head shot, she seemed to suddenly be returning the interest. But the budding relationship between Sherri and Parker led to some discord between Harlem Heat and their manager, even as Buck & Slater started having serious problems with Parker. It all came to a head at Fall Brawl '95, as the two teams went at it while Sherri & Parker made loving eyes at each other. The match was actually decided by outside forces, as the Nasty Boys came down (after a ref bump) and got revenge on Buck, who had interfered in an earlier match. This allowed Booker T to make the pin, getting Harlem Heat the WCW Tag Titles for the third time.
After the match, Sherri and Col Parker kissed, uniting the two. This led to Buck & Slater firing Parker for his interest, so Parker later joined Sherri in managing Harlem Heat. The Heat had bigger problems, meanwhile, as, one day later, on Nitro, they surprisingly lost the Tag-Team Titles to the American Males (Buff Bagwell & Scotty Riggs). Not surprisingly, Harlem Heat immediately campaigned for a rematch, and a little over a week later, they again faced the American Males, beating them to regain the belts. Harlem Heat then concentrated on defending the belts proudly for the next few months, as they apparently earned the respect of the fans, even if they hadn't turned face. For the rest of the year, though, although they stayed the Tag-Team Champions, Harlem Heat didn't get much time on the PPVs, only making an appearance in the WWIII Battle Royal at World War III '95. Harlem Heat worked well enough as a team in the Battle Royal to last for a long while, but it was all for naught, as both were eliminated. Randy Savage eventually got the win.
1996
Going into the new year, Harlem Heat started a rivalry with Lex Luger & Sting, who had teamed up despite Luger acting more and more like a heel. However, the team paid off, as Harlem Heat lost the belts to Luger & Sting in January '96. The feud continued for a while, as Harlem Heat wanted to regain the belts, even as Luger & Sting were having to deal with other challengers, like the Road Warriors. At Superbrawl VI, Harlem Heat went at it with the tag champs, looking to regain their prizes. However, the Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal), who were going to get a title shot later on in the evening, interfered, taking out Stevie Ray with a lead pipe to allow Luger to get the pin.
The problems between Harlem Heat and the Road Warriors continued to grow, leading to Stevie Ray being taken out by the Warriors at one point. This led to Booker T teaming up with Sting (Luger was involved in the main event later on) to take on the Warriors in a "Chicago Street Fight" at Uncensored '96. The match was an out-and-out war, with all four wrestlers use different weapons, from chairs to broomsticks. In the end, Stevie Ray came out of the back to help his brother, giving Hawk a chair shot to the head to help Booker T make the pin, winning the match and getting some revenge. Harlem Heat kept feuding with the Road Warriors for the next few months, as well as looking for a chance to get the belts back around their waist. At Slamboree '96 in May, a "Battlebowl"-style tournament was set up, with all tag-team partners being split. This led to the interesting match-up of Booker T being forced to team with Animal against Animal's partner, Hawk, and Lex Luger. The two teams went at it for a while, but, not surprisingly, neither team could get along, with Hawk & Luger fighting at one point. Both teams eventually brawled out of the ring, leading to a Double Count-Out, which kept both out of the final match of the PPV. Booker T then could only watch as Stevie Ray and his partner, Big Bubba, also had problems, leading to them losing to Scott Norton & Ice Train.
Harlem Heat soon regrouped and stayed a major force in the WCW Tag-Team Division, earning a spot near the end of June '96 in a "Triangle" Match against Luger & Sting, who were still the champions, and the Steiner Brothers. After a wild match, Harlem Heat reclaimed the gold for the 5th time. While Luger & Sting left the tag division for a while to start battling the nWo, Harlem Heat concentrated against the Steiners, defeating them, via DQ, in a dark match at Bash At The Beach '96. The war continued between the two teams over the next month, with the Steiners winning away the WCW Tag Titles near the end of July '96, only to have Harlem Heat take them back 3 days later. At Hogg Wild '96, the two teams squared off again, this time with Harlem Heat retaining the belts.
Harlem Heat, as the champions, would face several major challengers over the next few months, including the Steiners, a reformed Luger & Sting, The Public Enemy, and the Nasty Boys, whom Harlem Heat defended against at Fall Brawl '96. Both Sherri & Col Parker were at ringside to help distract Knobs & Sags. Sherri also was a key factor in Harlem Heat's victory, hitting Knobs with Parker's cane to knock him out. A few weeks later, though, the luck didn't hold, as The Public Enemy (Rocco Rock & Johnny Grunge) were able to take away the belts. At the beginning of October '96, Harlem Heat got their rematch, and once again made the most of it, becoming the 7-Time WCW World Tag-Team Champions.
This apparently got the attention of the Outsiders (Kevin Nash & Scott Hall), who were the major force of the new World order at the time. The nWo was interested in taking all of the gold for themselves, making Booker T & Stevie Ray faces in the eyes of the fans, since they were fighting for WCW. At Halloween Havoc '96, the two teams met up, with Harlem Heat holding the champions' advantage. They also seemed to have the edge in numbers, having Sherri & Col Parker at ringside. But Sherri was basically taken out after Hall opted to give her a kiss, and Parker's presence turned out to be the downfall for his team. While the referee was distracted by Stevie Ray, Booker T got the Harlem Hangover on Hall, only to have Nash steal Parker's cane and hit Booker T with it, allowing Hall to get the pin and win away the Tag-Team Titles.
Although Harlem Heat was interested in getting the belts back, they had their own internal problems to deal with. On one show, Sherri was expected to marry Col Parker. However, Parker left Sherri at the altar, instead going after Madusa. Parker later joined with the Amazing French Canadians (Jacques Rougeau & Pierre Oulette), as Sherri & Harlem Heat sought revenge. At World War III '96, Harlem Heat took on the Amazing French Canadians, and won out in the end with the Harlem Hangover. This got Sherri five minutes in the ring with Parker, and she immediately started attacking him. Parker soon ran for it, getting away from the woman scorned. Harlem Heat competed in the World War III Battle Royal later in the night, but couldn't stand up against the nWo, who eliminated both men. The Giant went on to win the match.
1997
Harlem Heat continued to work together going into the new year, although title shots were few and far between, since the nWo (and the Outsiders) weren't giving them out very often. At Clash of the Champions XXXIV, Harlem Heat started to make the climb back up, taking out Joe Gomez & the Renegade. This helped Harlem Heat get into a "Four Corners" Match scheduled at Superbrawl VII between themselves, the Steiner Brothers, the Faces of Fear (Meng & the Barbarian), and The Public Enemy. However, the Steiners were both injured due to the nWo running them off the road at one point, making the match a "Triple Threat" bout instead. Unfortunately for Harlem Heat, they were not factors at the end of the match, as The Public Enemy double-teamed the Barbarian and got the victory.
Harlem Heat got some revenge at Uncensored '97, winning a "#1 Contenders Hardcore" Match over The Public Enemy, thanks in great part to Jeff Jarrett & Steve "Mongo" McMichael attacking Rocco Rock. Unfortunately, Harlem Heat couldn't make the most of their opportunity, as the Outsiders, with nWo assistance, stayed the WCW Tag-Team Champions. Still, things were looking up for Harlem Heat, as they managed to get involved in a "Four Way WCW Heavyweight Title #1 Contenders" Match at Spring Stampede '97, also involving Lex Luger and the Giant. There was some concern going into the match that Harlem Heat would have to fight each other, but Sherri promised that it wouldn't be a problem. The match started almost as a tag-team affair, as Harlem Heat tagged each other in against Luger & the Giant. At one point, though, both brothers were tagged in and went at it for a brief while, before Booker tagged in Luger. The match finished similar to a tag-team match after that, as the Giant kept Booker T out of the ring, while Luger put Stevie Ray in the Torture Rack, forcing him to submit and winning the title shot.
With the loss of the title shot, Harlem Heat sank back into the large contenders' pool for the WCW World Tag-Team Titles. Over the next few months, Harlem Heat faced off against teams like The Public Enemy, the Steiner Brothers, and the nWo's Vicious & Delicious (Scott Norton & Buff Bagwell), trying to work their way back to the tag-team gold, with little success. Along the way, Harlem Heat moved away from Sister Sherri, which seemed to be hurting their ability to win. Thus, at Road Wild '97, with Harlem Heat scheduled to face Vicious & Delicious, Booker T & Stevie Ray promised a surprise, and delivered it, as Jacqueline (coming over from the WWF) walked out to join them. Jacqueline helped Harlem Heat win the match, distracting Norton by jumping on his back after Norton had hit Booker T with his Shoulder Breaker. Booker T then got a quick kick for the victory.
With Jacqueline on their side, Harlem Heat started to move up the rankings again, getting into a "#1 Contender" Match at Fall Brawl '97 against the Steiner Brothers. However, the Steiners were too much on that particular evening, with the Steiners taking out Stevie Ray with a double-team suplex for the victory. Harlem Heat then sank back into the tag-team depths, unable to get their title shots, especially after Jacqueline left the team. As 1997 ran down, Stevie Ray was put on the shelf with a knee injury, keeping Harlem Heat from contending. However, it didn't hold Booker T back, as he began to work on his singles career in his brother's absence. A day after Starrcade '97, in what was considered a major upset, Booker T defeated the Disco Inferno for the WCW World Television Title, Booker T's first singles gold with the company. With one win, a rough year had become a successful one for Booker T.
1998
Booker T then went on to have a brief feud with Rick Martel, leading to a match between the two at Souled Out '98. The two had mutual respect for each other, but with obvious aggression due to the belt being on the line. At the end, Booker T's skills proved too much for Martel's experience, as Booker T hit the Harlem Hangover for the victory. After the match, Booker T and Martel shook hands, only to see Perry Saturn run in and attack Martel (whom he was feuding with). Booker T made the save. A few weeks later, Booker T gave a rematch to Martel on Nitro. Once again, Saturn made an appearance, going after Martel when the ref was down. Booker T took out Saturn with a kick, but this left him open to Martel locking him in the Quebec Crab and winning the match, taking away the Television Title!
A few days later, Booker T got his chance to regain the belt at Superbrawl VIII, taking on Martel for the TV Title, with the winner having to face Saturn for the belt right afterwards. After a very competitive match, Booker T caught Martel with an axe kick as Martel was coming off the turnbuckle, winning the match and regaining the Television Championship. Saturn attacked right afterwards, trying to make Booker T submit to the Rings of Saturn. Booker T was able to escape, however, continuing the match. Near the end, Booker T missed the Harlem Hangover, giving Saturn the advantage. But Booker T was able to come back after a couple of near-pins to catch Saturn with a quick kick, winning two matches back-to-back to stay the TV Champ.
Booker T stayed a fighting champion for the next month, eventually signing to face Eddie Guerrero for the belt at Uncensored '98. With Chavo Guerrero, Eddie's nephew, forced to watch at ringside, Booker T and Eddie had a strong match of back-and-forth action, with Eddie's heel tactics riling up the crowd. In the end, Booker T used his Missile Dropkick (which was quickly replacing the more-difficult Harlem Hangover as his finisher) to win the match, staying the champion. Booker T next started feuding with "The Crippler" Chris Benoit. The feud began as mutual respect between the two, with the belt hanging between them. At Spring Stampede '98, the two faced off for the gold. Benoit nearly won the match, putting Booker T into the Crippler Crossface, but the ref was down, keeping the match going. As Benoit checked on the ref, Booker T got the Axe Kick for the victory, retaining his title through slightly dirty tactics.
This kept the feud between the two wrestlers hot, as they began to face off on multiple occassions for the gold. At one point, the wrestlers traded the Television Title back and forth a few days in a row. Eventually, due to Benoit's interference, Booker T lost the belt to Dave "Fit" Finley. After Booker T subsequently involved himself in a Benoit-Finley match, keeping Benoit from winning the gold, the two opted for a seven-match series, in which the winner would go on to a title shot against Finley. The series went all the way and beyond, as Benoit and Booker T had great match after great match. It's still thought of as one of the best series in wrestling history. The deciding factor soon turned out to be the return of Stevie Ray, who stood at ringside and gave moral support to Booker T. In what was supposed to be the seventh match of the series, Bret Hart, who had been trying to get Benoit (his fellow Canadian) to join him in the nWo, attacked Booker T while the ref was down. However, Benoit, not wanting a win like that, told the ref, getting himself DQ'ed instead. Booker T then said that he wouldn't accept it, either, leaving a deciding match still in the air.
It was quickly decided that the two wrestlers had to face off one more time to decide it all. At the '98 Great American Bash, Booker T and Benoit faced off again, this time to decide who would win the series and face Fit Finlay for the TV Title later that night. The two had another competitive match, with Booker T winning out in the end with the Missile Dropkick. Booker T seemed to be at a disadvantage, though, going into the match against Finlay, as he had injured his knee during the bout. Finlay capitalized on the injury, trying to make it worse, but Booker T came back and got a piledriver to take out Finlay and become a 5-time Television Champion.
Booker T next focused on the man who had attacked him during the Best-of-7 Series, "The Hitman" Bret Hart. Hart was disappointed in Benoit's actions, and wanted to get the gold for himself. At Bash At The Beach '98, the two wrestlers faced off with the gold on the line. Booker T seemed to have an edge near the end, despite his knee still bothering him. Hart, though, got out of the ring and got a chair, coming back in and using it on Booker T's knee, causing the disqualification but also putting Booker T on the shelf. This was actually to cover the fact that Booker T needed knee surgery.
For a time, Stevie Ray took over the TV Title and defended it like it was his own, despite never fully saying that Booker T had given him the right to defend it. In any case, Stevie Ray lost Booker T's belt to Chris Jericho, ending the reign. Stevie Ray continued to show bad tactics over the next few months, as he joined up with the new World order. In November '98, Booker T made his return, challenging Hart and questioning his brother's decision to join the nWo. However, a fight between the two brothers did not materialize, as Stevie Ray seemed to be avoiding a confrontation. Booker T later became involved in minor feuds with the Disco Inferno and others, mostly coming out on top as 1998 came to an end.
1999
Booker T began to climb his way back into contention in the new year, facing off against some of the top contenders for the Television Title. He faced the Disco Inferno at Superbrawl IX, with the two having a very competitive match before Booker T broke out the Harlem Hangover, to the approval of the crowd, to get the victory. This win gave Booker T a lot of momentum, and at Uncensored '99, he returned to the top of the ladder, defeating Scott Steiner (after an errant chair shot from Buff Bagwell) and becoming a 6-time WCW Television Champion. He defended the TV Title against all comers, then entered the US Title Tournament as well, after Scott Hall was injured. Booker T made it to the Finals at Spring Stampede '99, but Scott Steiner stole the victory, and the title, with a foreign object.
In May '99, Booker T appeared to have renewed acquaintances with his brother, Stevie Ray, who came into the ring to take out Booker T's opponent more than once. However, Rick Steiner came out and started attacking the two brothers, setting up a match at Slamboree '99. During the match, Scott Steiner, Rick's brother, appeared and helped Rick win the TV Title from Booker. Booker then disappeared for a while, wrestling occasionally as a midcarder. In late July '99, though, the reunification began. Booker T and Stevie Ray made saves for the other, then, finally, it happened. Booker T asked his brother to take off his nWo t-shirt, and Stevie Ray did it, reuniting Harlem Heat.
As soon as the brothers came back together, their sights became locked on their former property: the WCW World Tag-Team Titles. They began challenging the Triad (Diamond Dallas Page, Bam-Bam Bigelow, and Kanyon) for the gold. On the first Nitro of August '99, they defeated the Triad in a non-title match. This set up the Title Match at Road Wild '99. Despite attempted interference by Page, Harlem Heat defeated Bigelow & Kanyon to win the Tag-Team Titles for the 8th time, a great record. A few weeks later, though, Harlem Heat was upset by the West Texas Rednecks, as Barry and Kendall Windham walked away with the belts. The two groups feuded for the month, then met at Fall Brawl '99, where, for the 9th time, Harlem Heat won the gold.
Harlem Heat lost the tag belts a week before Halloween Havoc '99, losing to Konnan and Rey Mysterio Jr of the Filthy Animals. Thankfully, the PPV gave the duo one more shot, and they took advantage, winning a triangle match over Konnan & Billy Kidman (subbing for an injured Mysterio) and Brian Knobs & Hugh Morrus. Their 10th reign as a team failed to last, though, as at the following Nitro, they were beaten by Konnan & Kidman. Shorty thereafter, the problems started again within Harlem Heat, which could be traced back to one name: Midnight. Midnight was the black powerhouse lady who appeared when the lights went out, helping to defend Harlem Heat against their foes. But although Booker T showed respect and admiration to her, Stevie Ray only showed resentment and jealousy.
Booker T had more to worry about, though. First, Booker T lost in the first round of the WCW World Title Tournament, to Jeff Jarrett. But Booker was then named the #1 Contender for the United States Heavyweight Title, and began a feud with Scott Hall, who held both the TV and US Titles. Despite Booker T's best efforts against Hall, he walked away from Mayhem '99 with another defeat on his record, and no title to show for it. Meanwhile, Midnight's presence began to be felt in WCW, and Stevie Ray's anger with her became more apparent with each show. The trio fought Creative Control (the Harris Brothers) & Curt Hennig at Starrcade '99, but the obvious friction between Stevie Ray and Midnight kept the group apart enough for the loss. Soon after, Stevie Ray forced a choice, striking at Midnight with his Slapjack. Booker T came to her defense, and Stevie Ray went after Booker as well. Harlem Heat, possibly the greatest tag-team in wrestling, was again broken up.
2000
Booker T and Stevie Ray feuded for the next month, with the violence between the two growing greater and greater. They met at Souled Out '00 inside the ring to decide who, finally, was the better brother. However, the match ended in a DQ win for Booker T, when "Big T" (formerly known as Ahmed Johnson) made his first appearance in WCW, attacking Booker. It soon became apparent that Stevie Ray considered Big T his brother's replacement. He brought in his lawyer, actually getting an order that said Booker could no longer use the "T" in his name, nor enter to the Harlem Heat music, since his brother owned the copyright. Booker and Big T fought at Superbrawl X, but Stevie Ray helped to make sure that Big T got the victory. The feud continued into the next month, as Booker found himself a partner and ally in Billy Kidman, to fight off the "new" Harlem Heat. Kidman & Booker worked well as a team, defeating Stevie Ray & Big T at Uncensored '00. Soon after, the feud lost ground, as the New Blood began.
When Vince Russo & Eric Bischoff came back to WCW and formed the New Blood in April '00, Booker, surprisingly, was one of the ones to quickly join them, fighting against the more established stars in the Millionaire's Club. However, friction quickly grew between Booker and his allies, as Booker did not display the heart for the violence Russo & Bischoff wanted. At Spring Stampede '00, Booker fought in the WCW United States Heavyweight Title Tournament. He lost in the first round, however, in a clean match with Sting. The two shook hands at the end of the match, showing that there was no animosity between them. This was a sure sign that Booker wouldn't be with the New Blood much longer. When Bischoff fired a bunch of the younger, less established wrestlers, Booker T came to their defense, joining them. This created the Misfits In Action, or M.I.A., consisting of Hugh Morrus (Captain E. Rection), Lash LaRoux (Cpl Cajun), Chavo Guerrero Jr (Lt Loco), and Van Hammer (Major Stash).
Booker T continued to help his newfound allies against the Filthy Animals, which was a branch of the New Blood. Bischoff, angry at the defiance, fired Booker T after a match, despite his protests. Next week, Booker T reappeared in army fatigues next to his military allies, calling himself "G.I. Bro", a gimmick he had used once in a lesser federation. As G.I. Bro, he joined with Captain Rection and his troops against the New Blood, and, most particularly, the Filthy Animals. The two groups faced off numerous times, normally with G.I. Bro cleaning house. G.I. Bro also continued his wars with the New Blood, focusing on "PerfectSean" Stasiak. The two met in a Boot Camp match at the '00 Great American Bash. The rules were that the first man to not answer the 10 count lost. Even with Chuck Palumbo interfering on behalf of his partner, G.I. Bro pulled out the victory over his adversary. A few weeks later, however, "G.I. Bro" handed the reigns of the MIA to Rection, making him a 'general', then came out as Booker T once again. The G.I. Bro gimmick was once again short-lived.
Booker T then entered into a short feud with Kanyon, with the two great technical wrestlers putting on different displays of wrestling talent. At Bash at the Beach '00, Kanyon managed to sneak away with the victory, after Jeff Jarrett ran down to knock out Booker with his guitar. Despite the loss, Booker had better things coming that night. In the match between Jarrett and Hogan for the World Title, Jarrett surprisingly laid down on his back, letting Hogan pin him. Vince Russo then came out and proclaimed that Hogan could have the old title belt, but that Jarrett and Booker T would be fighting in the main event for the new one. Booker T took advantage of the surprise match by catching Jarrett off the turnbuckle with the Book-End (similar to the Rock Bottom), earning the World Heavyweight Title for the first time in his career.
Jarrett, still calling himself "The Chosen One", immediately demanded a rematch against the new World Champion. After a month of confrontations, the two met again at New Blood Rising, where Booker T again came through in the clutch, getting his Bookend to take down the Chosen One. Booker then faced his next challenge, that of "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash, who won a #1 Contender's Match at New Blood Rising. The two fought on many occassions, with Nash managing to steal away the World Title at one point. When the two met in a Steel Cage match at Fall Brawl '00, Booker T showed that the bigger they are, the harder they fall, regaining the World Title from Big Sexy. This was the start, however, of one of Booker T's greatest feuds, as Nash's ally at the time, Scott Steiner, became the next one to challenge the World Champion.
Booker T and Big Poppa Pump soon began a very bloody feud that lasted for months, meeting at consecutive pay-per-views. Booker T managed to survive at Halloween Havoc '00, as Steiner's temper got the better of him, causing the disqualification victory. But the two weren't done yet. In an epic "Straight Jacket Steel Cage" match at Mayhem '00, Booker T finally fell, as Steiner pulled off the upset and walked away with the World Title. Booker T, meanwhile, was put on the sidelines with various injuries. He would not return for many months, as Steiner, in his reign of terror on WCW, bragged about ending Booker's career.
2001
In March '01, Steiner, still the World Champion, was in the midst of a feud with Diamond Dallas Page. Steiner continued to claim that he had eliminated much of the talent in WCW, calling Page the Last Man Standing. However, Page had a surprise for Steiner on a Nitro, bringing out the returning Booker T. Booker, DDP, & Ernest "The Cat" Miller fought Steiner, Lex Luger, & Buff Bagwell in a 6-man tag that night, with the fans getting a large dose of what they had missed. Booker T won out the night, getting the Axe Kick on Steiner and the pin, coming back in style. While DDP and Steiner were busy in the World Title fight, Booker T went after the United States Title, which was around Steiner's brother Rick's waist. The two met at WCW Greed, where a fierce fight ensued. In the end, after Shane Douglas interfered and knocked Rick off the turnbuckle, Booker T got the Bookend to gain the US Heavyweight Championship for the first time.
After the victory, Booker T renewed his vow to get revenge on Scott Steiner for being put out of action for so long. Steiner in turn swore to place Booker T's name back on his elimination list. The two were slotted to face off one more time on WCW's Season Finale of Monday Nitro for the Unification of the US and World belts. It was the opening match of the night, with both men pulling out all the stops. In the end, Booker T performed a brilliant flip out of a Powerbomb attempt and got the Bookend, pinning Steiner to finally earn revenge, as well as the Heavyweight Title for a fourth time. The night ended with Booker T on top of the federation, holding two titles, one for each hand. That was the end of the run of the Turner-ran WCW, with Booker T standing on top.
WWF
In June '01, at the World Wrestling Federation's King of the Ring '01, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, the WWF World Champion, was taking on Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho in a "Triple Threat" match for the belt. During the match, all three men were down, with Austin away from the rest on the outside. Booker T then suddenly reappeared, attacking Austin with lefts, rights, and axe kicks. He then gave Austin the Bookend through the announcers' table, before leaving due to security. At the next Raw, Booker T, with new WCW owner Shane McMahon at his side, appeared at WWF New York and taunted Austin, asking him how it felt to be the hunted. He then called Austin out, saying that if Austin wanted some, he could come get some. Austin, with Kurt Angle, headed angrily towards WWF New York, then searched for Booker T & Shane McMahon, but was told that they had left. Back at Madison Square Garden, Vince McMahon was waiting in the ring, when his son Shane came out. As Vince was yelling at Shane, Booker T came out of the crowd and entered the ring, clobbering Vince with an Axe Kick. He then departed the way he came, as WWF wrestlers charged the ring.
On the next Raw, WCW was allowed by the WWF to have matches on their program. Booker T was signed as the first one to wrestle, facing off against another WCW wrestler, Buff Bagwell, with the WCW World Title on the line. Both Booker T and Buff went at it, with the gold on the line. But after Booker T hit his Axe Kick on Buff, he was then assaulted by both Austin & Angle, getting beat down. It soon became a triple team, as Bagwell surprisingly joined in on the brawl. With the odds 3-on-1, Booker T was savagely beaten and thrown out of the arena. In a nice twist of irony, Buff soon joined him outside, as Austin & Angle turned on him. At Smackdown, Booker T again defended his belt, this time against Diamond Dallas Page, who snapped and tried to use a chair. He was distracted, though, by the Undertaker, allowing Booker T to get the roll-up and stay the WCW Champion. After the match, Angle again raced to the ring and attacked, trying the Olympic Slam. Booker T broke out of it, though, then took out Angle with an Axe Kick, followed by a knockout shot with the WCW Title. While Booker T was taking care of business, though, DDP and a large number of WCW wrestlers attacked the Undertaker outside, taking him out. Shane McMahon tried to stop them, only to get taken out by DDP as well. Booker T tried to make the save, only to have the numbers knock him out.
The next week at Raw, Shane McMahon surprisingly allied with Page, showing that the assault was actually a trick to give him a shot at the Undertaker. Booker T also turned heel, with little action required on his part. During the night, Booker T was challenged to a match for the WCW World Title by Kurt Angle, and accepted. During the match, Angle got his Angle Lock on Booker T, only to have the WCW ref, Nick Patrick, ignore it and yell at Shane McMahon instead. Later on, after Patrick was knocked out of the ring, Angle landed the Olympic Slam and made the cover, with the WWF ref, Earl Hebner, running to the ring. He only got a 2 count, though, before Patrick pulled him out of the ring. While the two referees rolled out, punching and kicking, Booker T got the WCW Title from Shane and knocked out Angle. Another WCW referee, Charles Robinson, then hit the ring and counted the 3 count, allowing Booker T to retain the belt in heel fashion. Later that night, Booker T joined the rest of the WCW faction as they allied themselves with the ECW group, brutally beating the WWF wrestlers and truly igniting the Invasion.
Booker T next appeared next to Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley at the next Raw, with Steph congratulating him on holding two WCW titles. During the conversation, Chris Jericho appeared, taunting Stephanie. Booker T stepped up for her, saying that he shouldn't be talking to a lady like that. Jericho then retorted with a challenge, wanting Booker T to put up the WCW World Title. With Stephanie's approval, Booker T reluctantly agreed. At the match, the energy went back and forth, with the WCW referee once again apparently giving Booker T some breaks, acting injured when Jericho hit the Lionsault for the pin. Later on, Jericho got the Liontamer, and Booker T tapped, only to have Nick Patrick again claim to be hurting. Patrick was then knocked out of the ring by Earl Hebner, who then went to signal for the bell, only to be stopped by Shane McMahon. McMahon was then knocked down by Jericho, but Booker T recovered enough for a low blow and a roll-up, earning the fast count by Patrick and again narrowly escaping with the WCW World Title.
At Invasion, Booker T was the leader of the ECWCW team, along with Diamond Dallas Page (WCW), Rhyno (ECW), & the Dudley Boys (ECW). They took on the apparently revamped "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, Kane & the Undertaker. During the brawl, Booker T took some hard shots, including an accidental Gore from Rhyno. This put him off-balance enough for Angle to take the advantage, and eventually hit his Angle Slam and put on the Angle Lock. But with the referee down, no one was there to check on Booker T's submission. Before a new ref could get there, Austin entered the ring and shockingly turned on the WWF, Stunning Angle and rolling Booker T on top. A shaken ref made the 1-2-3, giving Booker T's team the win and earning Booker T a great new ally in "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, placing both World Champions on the same team for the first time.
