Name: John Cena
Height: 6 foot 1
Weight: 240 pounds
From: West Newbury, Mass.
Finishing Move: The FU
Career Highlights: WWE Championship (defeated JBL at WrestleMania 21); U.S. Championship (2 times)
Straight up and in your face, the fan favorite rapper and WWE Champion John Cena has made quite the notorious reputation for himself in WWE by speaking the truth and backing it up in the ring with his own style of ruckus. Pimping baggy jean shorts and a throwback basketball jersey, Cena will often get amped up signaling the end for his victims by pumping up his kicks leading to him dropping his trademark “you can't see me catchphrase en route to the FU.
A street brawler by definition, Cena is always up for a fight against anyone who steps to him. Of course, for those who step foot in the ring to lock up with Cena or do battle on the microphone, they best prepare to get burned by this RAW Superstar’s blistering edgy rap lyrics that often scorch the egos of those who dare challenge the rebellious rapper. Cena refuses to back down from any man who gets in his way.
Cena won the 2005 winter tournament on Smackdown to face then reigning WWE Heavyweight Champion John Bradshaw Layfield (“JBL) at WrestleMania 21. The rebel rapper Cena versus the privileged and affluent big mouth Texan turned city slicker JBL was on for Mania. JBL and his vile Cabinet tried everything to keep Cena and his fans – known as the Chain Gang - down. However, Cena refused to quit or give up on his dream of winning the WWE Championship and on April 3, 2005 he pinned JBL to win the WWE Heavyweight Championship for his Chain Gang on the grandest stage of them all – WrestleMania.
Recently, the “Doctor of Thuganomics, as Cena is known in some parts has turned the SmackDown!… and RAW brands upside down being the shocking first draftee in the 2005 WWE Draft Lottery joining the RAW brand as the WWE Heavyweight Champion, in a WWE moment fans will never forget. |

Height: 6'3"
Weight: 260 lbs
Real Name: John Cena
DOB: 4/23/77
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Other Names: "Prototype of the Perfect Man" (OVW), The Prototype(OVW)
Wrestler Since: 2000
Finishing Maneuver: FU, Proto-Bomb
History:
It only took John Cena a few years of hard work to make his way up to World Wrestling Entertainment. It only took him a year to become one of the major players in the organization. How high can he climb with so many years left in front of him?
The Beginning
Cena grew up with an inside view of the professional wrestling business. His father was an announcer for Chaotic Wrestling, going by the name of John Fabulous. Needless to say, Cena began getting training very early on in his life from various wrestlers at the shows, as well as learning the tricks of the trade. Cena made his in-ring debut for Universal Pro Wrestling under Rick Bassman in 2000, quickly making a name for himself in the WWF developmental organization as the Prototype. It didn't take long for the Prototype to rise to the top, winning the UPW Heavyweight Title from Smelly in April '00. The Prototype would hold the belt for over a month before dropping the belt back to Smelly. It was just the first step for Cena, who was quickly looking for bigger and better things.
OVW
In 2001, having signed a developmental deal with the WWF, the Prototype moved over to Ohio Valley Wrestling, the main training federation for future WWF stars. He also appeared some in another WWF developmental organization, HWA. The Prototype quickly became one of the more despised heels around, partially because of his attitude. At The Last Dance in April '01, the Prototype joined with Mr. Black in the unenviable task of taking on Mark Henry & the Big Show, two of the biggest wrestlers around. Although they tried to sneak out a win, there was nothing happening against the two WWF stars. Later on in '01, the Prototype began a tag-team with an unlikely wrestler, Rico Constantino. The two men worked together in the OVW Southern Tag-Team Title Tournament in August '01, with the titles up for grabs after the former champs, the Minnesota Wrecking Crew (Shelton Benjamin & Brock Lesnar) had to vacate due to injury. The Prototype & Constantino beat Ron Waterman & Brian Keck, Rob Conway & the Damaja(Danny Basham), and the Disciples of Synn to win the tournament and gain the belts. The duo would defend the belts for a few months before falling to the recovered Minnesota Wrecking Crew in October '01.
2002
The Prototype started to really take off as a major player in OVW the next year, as he feuded with another young star, Leviathan (Dave Batista). In February '02, the Prototype managed to take down Leviathan to become the OVW Heavyweight Champion, a major accomplishment. The Prototype would defend the title for the next few months, taking on many challengers, while also regularly teaming up with Sean O'Haire. In May '02, the Prototype's reign finally ended, as he was beaten for the OVW Title by Nova (Simon Dean). Only a short time later, the Prototype ended his run in Ohio Valley, as he was called up to the big show: World Wrestling Entertainment.
WWE
On the last Smackdown of June '02, Kurt Angle came out to celebrate his recent victory over Hulk Hogan. He called out anyone from the back that he hadn't faced before, so that he could make them tap out. John Cena walked out to answer the call. When Angle asked why Cena thought he could come out and face one of the best in the business, Cena answered "Ruthless Aggression", then attacked, starting off the match with momentum. In a surprisingly competitive match, Cena came close to a victory numerous times, but just couldn't put Angle away. In the end, Angle won out, getting the pinfall victory. After the match, Cena tried to shake Angle's hand, but Angle laughed in his face and walked off. Still, Cena's skills earned respect from the locker room, as various wrestlers, including the Undertaker, congratulated him.
On the next Smackdown, Cena was called into Vince McMahon's office, since Mr. McMahon wanted to meet him. It was revealed during McMahon's questions that Cena was from Boston, where that Smackdown was taking place, immediately making him a favorite of the crowd. Cena's entry into the office angered Chris Jericho, though, who had been having a tirade about Edge beforehand. When Jericho berated the young star, Cena slapped him in the face, then left, prompting Jericho to demand a match with him. Cena put up another great fight, but lost when Jericho used the ropes for leverage to get the pinfall. Afterwards, Jericho teased a handshake, but instead smacked Cena. Cena responded by taking out Jericho with a bodyslam, sending Jericho out of the ring.
A week later, Cena was placed in a tag-team match pitting himself & the Undertaker against Jericho & Angle. When Cena went to tell the Undertaker what an honor it was to team with him, though, the Undertaker (who was waiting to beat up the Rock) threatened to take him out as well, then told him to leave. Afterwards, though, the Undertaker got in a brawl with both Jericho & Angle, then came back to the locker room and demanded to know why Cena hadn't backed him up. Cena, of course, replied that he had been told to leave, but that he would back up the Undertaker later that night. In the tag-team match, Cena & the Undertaker managed to work well together, with Cena actually getting the pinfall victory by rolling up Jericho after he had been distracted by the Undertaker. After the match, though, Jericho brutally attacked Cena, throwing him from the ring.
Cena and Jericho faced off in a singles match again on the next Smackdown, but Cena's abilities eventually frustrated Jericho, leading to him hitting a low blow on Cena to cause the DQ. Jericho then nailed Cena with a steel chair, taking him out. This led to Cena's first WWE pay-per-view match, facing Jericho at Vengeance '02. Jericho, not wanting to fight the rookie, tried to hit Cena with a chair even before the match began, but Cena managed to avoid it, taking the upper hand. This didn't last, as Jericho's experience led him to control much of the match. Cena did get in some flurries of offense, but was in serious trouble near the end, when Jericho landed the Lionsault. Jericho refused to cover, though, wanting instead to force Cena to submit. But when he went for the Walls of Jericho, Cena rolled him up, getting the 3 count for the upset win! Afterwards, Cena celebrated, while Jericho threw another tantrum.
A few days later, Cena took on one of Jericho's Anti-American partners, Test, once again surprising the more experienced wrestler with a roll-up for the victory. After the match, Test got revenge with a big boot to Cena's face, knocking him out. Later on that night, after Edge defeated Jericho in a Cage Match, he was attacked by the rest of the Anti-Americans. Cena, then Rey Mysterio, came out to Edge's aid, making the save. The feud between the two groups quickly came to an end, though, as the entire Anti-American squad jumped to Raw a few days later. Cena, Mysterio, & Edge continued to ally together, though, going against Angle, Eddie Guerrero, & Chris Benoit (the latter two had come over from Raw). In a six-man match between the wrestlers in August '02, Cena's team won out, with Mysterio surprisingly pinning Angle after a 619/Hurricanrana combination.
Unfortuntately for Cena, this was the highlight for the next few months, as he faded back into the midcard set, with no real feud in front of him. Cena had successive matches against Reverend D'Von Dudley, but mainly just played a part of Dudley's feud with his former pupil, Batista. In September '02, Cena was given a Non-Title Match against the Undisputed Champion, Brock Lesnar, but couldn't do much with it, as Lesnar won out with the F5. Cena didn't do any better on his return to OVW, where he lost to the OVW Heavyweight Champion, Nova, at Fall Brawl '02. In October '02, Cena began teaming with Billy Kidman in the WWE Smackdown Tag-Team Title Tournament. Unfortunately, it was a short run, as Cena & Kidman were beaten by Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit in the first round. This broke up the tag-team, as the two men faced off the next week. Cena got the cheap win by using his feet on the ropes. A week later, Cena and Kidman faced off again, this time with Kidman using the ropes to get the win. Cena attacked Kidman after the match, sending him into the ring steps and beginning his journey as a heel wrestler. Cena & Dawn Marie would face off with Kidman & Torrie Wilson at Rebellion '02, with Kidman's team getting the win after a Shooting Star Press.
It was on the '02 Halloween edition of Smackdown that John Cena finally began to develop his persona outside of the ring. He appeared dressed up as Vanilla Ice, cutting a few raps about how good he was. Cena continued to rap on the next Smackdown, insulting Rikishi before his match with the big man. Rikishi got some revenge, though, catching Cena with the Stinkface and later pinning him. A week later, Cena evened the feud, winning a tag-team match with Matt Hardy over Rikishi & Tajiri. Cena later got some ammunition to help him against Rikishi, bringing in a partner, B-Squared (Bull Buchanan). Cena & B-2 would feud with Rikishi for most of the rest of the year, usually with Rikishi getting the upper hand, despite the numbers.
2003
Going into the new year, Cena & B-2 seemed to be on a losing streak. On one Smackdown, after falling to Los Guerreros, Cena and B-2 began shoving each other. B-2 looked to have the advantage, but he was ambushed from behind by Redd Dogg, making his first appearance. Cena & Redd Dogg then took out B-2, slamming his shoulder into the ringpost. Cena would appear a few days later in the Royal Rumble '03 match, rapping his way down to the ring as entrant #18. He lasted for less than 10 minutes, though, with no eliminations, until he was taken over the top rope by the Undertaker. Cena continued to partner himself with Redd Dogg for a few weeks, as B-2, rather than feuding, basically faded out from WWE.
In February '03, Cena had a match with Brock Lesnar, in which, after a back-and-forth struggle, Lesnar won with the F-5. This wasn't enough for Lesnar, however, who wanted to send a message to the current Smackdown champ, Kurt Angle. He grabbed Cena again and used the F-5 to send him into the ringpost, a painful-looking maneuver. This put Cena in a cast, placing him on the shelf for a time. This didn't keep Cena off tv, though, as he continually appeared in promos, threatening revenge on Lesnar. He also put out a challenge for an Open Rap at Wrestlemania XIX, but didn't get the opportunity to perform at the show.
Cena returned to action in April '03, and was quickly placed in the four-man WWE #1 Contenders Tournament to decide who would be facing Lesnar for the Smackdown World Title. Thanks in part to a lot of interference from the Full-Blooded Italians, Cena got the surprising upset over the Undertaker to move into the finals against Chris Benoit. In a great technical match that, for once, featured no outside interference, Cena continued his string of upsets, rolling up Benoit for the victory and finally getting a shot at revenge against Lesnar. The next week, Cena won again, this time beating Rhyno, then sat in for commentary during the Lesnar/A-Train match-up. After Lesnar got the F-5 on A-Train, though, Cena dropped the headphones and entered the ring, attacking Lesnar and causing the disqualification (as well as bloodying the champ).
At Backlash '03, Cena entered into the main event with a chance to both get revenge on Lesnar and gain his first WWE World Championship. The match started off with Lesnar in firm control, with Cena scrambling to catch up. Cena eventually made a comeback, reopening Lesnar's wound and causing blood to flow. The match went back-and-forth for a time, until Cena's willingness to cheat backfired on him, as the referee caught him going for his chain (usually worn around his neck). The ref took the illegal object away, as a protesting Cena stepped right into the F5, losing the match to the champion.
Cena angrily protested the loss on the next Smackdown, but was interrupted by Brian "Spanky" Kendrick, who did a rap of his own. This earned Spanky a Fireman's Carry Slam, a move that Cena would call the FU, an obvious play off of Brock Lesnar's F5. The next week, as Cena was going for his chain during a match with Rhyno, Spanky intervened, helping to distract Cena and allow Rhyno to roll him up for a win. Cena and Spanky's feud were soon joined with others, as Cena & members of the FBI (Johnny Stamboli & Chuck Palumbo) teamed to face Spanky, Chris Benoit, & Rhyno at Judgment Day '03. Cena's team mainly focused on the youngest wrestler, Spanky, trying to keep him away from his team. Near the end, a brawl between all 6 wrestlers broke out, with Cena being placed in Benoit's Crippler Crossface. Although Cena tapped, he wasn't the legal man, as the FBI were able to take out Spanky and get the pin to win the match.
Cena defeated Spanky on the next Smackdown, basically ending their feud. Cena next concentrated on the WWE United States Heavyweight Title Tournament, but was surprisingly beat in the first round by Billy Gunn, leaving a sour taste in Cena's mouth. This left Cena looking for respect, which he thought he could get by going after one of the legends in the business: the Undertaker. Cena and the Dead Man feuded for the next month, with Cena touting the match as the 'main event'. He also cut a series of promos about the Undertaker, including going to a cemetary for one of his raps. He also had a hilarious bit with the General Manager, Stephanie McMahon, in which is rapped about Stephanie's upcoming fight with Sable and how he'd pay $20 for Stephanie to rip Sable's top off, then spanked Stephanie on the behind.
At Vengeance '03, Cena got his shot against the Undertaker. It wasn't pretty in the beginning, as the Undertaker basically dominated the younger wrestler, even getting a massive Chokeslam that could have ended it, if the Undertaker hadn't pulled Cena off the mat, wanting to punish him some more. But Cena got an opportunity and came back, getting in a few moves on the Dead Man. But nothing seemed to keep the Undertaker down, not even a chain shot to the head. In the end, Cena got the Undertaker in the corner and bragged above him, while raining down punches. But the Undertaker grabbed him and lifted him high, getting the Last Ride and putting Cena away. The feud continued for a few more weeks, with Cena getting a pinfall on the Undertaker during a tag-team match (Cena & A-Train vs. the Undertaker & Orlando Jordan).
Cena next fought in a short feud with the new United States Champion, Eddie Guerrero. A "Street Fight" between the two took place in September '03, with the two wrestlers fighting in a circle of cars. Both took some hard bumps on both the cars and the concrete, and involved many different weapons, including a lawn mower. The end came, though, when Eddie's nephew, Chavo Guerrero Jr, made his return, hitting Cena with a hubcap. Eddie then jumped off an SUV with a Frog Splash to end the match. Cena found a new target soon enough, locking onto Kurt Angle. Cena said that he'd always been in Angle's shadow, and couldn't take it anymore. He ambushed Angle backstage at one point, then ran from the arena, being chased by Angle in a limo. Later on, during a tag match between Cena & Lesnar vs. Angle & the Undertaker, Cena got the win by ko'ing Angle with the steel chain.
The duo had a "Rap-Off" the next week, with Cena rapping while Angle just said some phrases in rhyme, followed by a brawl. A week later, Angle came out dressed as Cena and gave a rap, making fun of Cena. He also had a midget-Angle come out and force "Cena" to tap out to the Ankle Lock. When the real Cena came out and angrily got in Angle's face, the midget Angle gave him a low blow from behind, which allowed Angle to get the Angle Slam and send Cena from the ring. At No Mercy '03, the two wrestlers showed their aggression early, shoving each other and flipping each other off. The match was stellar, with both getting close counts throughout. Cena nearly won multiple times, both from the FU and from the use of the chain. In the end, though, Cena was caught in the Ankle Lock, and, after much struggling, was forced to tap out.
Over the next few weeks, Cena teamed up reluctantly with the A-Train in tag-team matches against Angle & Chris Benoit. After A-Train cost them one of the matches by kicking Cena, the rapper got into it with A-Train after the match, catching the big man with the FU. It was around this time that the new GM, Paul Heyman, announced that there would be an Elimination Match at the next pay-per-view, with Angle and Brock Lesnar both choosing teammates to join them. While Angle quickly chose Benoit, Hardcore Holly, and the APA, Lesnar selected three massive men in the Big Show, Nathan Jones, & Matt Morgan. Lesnar also hinted to Cena that he would be the 5th man on his team. That night, Lesnar took out Faarooq of the APA, badly injuring his knee.
A week later, after Cena defeated Rey Mysterio, Lesnar and his team came out to personally invite Cena onto their team. But Cena turned down the opportunity, calling Lesnar's group Team Sasquatch. This led to the A-Train attacking Cena from behind, allowing the entire team to beat him down. A-Train then joined Lesnar's team. Later on, Angle & Benoit were placed in a 2-on-4 Handicap Match, with Lesnar's team beating the two men down. Cena came down with the attempted save, hitting several with chair shots until the Big Show stopped him. It was announced on the next show that Cena would be taking Faarooq's place on Angle's team, so that he could have his chance for revenge against Lesnar, A-Train, and the rest.
At The Survivor Series '03, Angle's team and Lesnar's team went at it very quickly. Just as the match started, the first elimination occurred, as Hardcore Holly attacked Brock Lesnar, shoving a referee out of the way and being DQ'ed. Bradshaw evened things up by eliminating A-Train with the Clothesline From Hell, but he was then taken down by the Big Show's Chokeslam. After a long series of wrestling, Benoit managed to tag in Angle, who was able to eliminate Matt Morgan with the Angle Slam, then forced Nathan Jones to tap to the Ankle Lock. Lesnar took advantage of Angle's distraction, though, and caught him with the F-5, eliminating the team captain. However, Benoit got his team back the advantage, blocking an F-5 and locking Lesnar in the Crossface! Lesnar was forced to tap out, giving Benoit the win over the current champion. The Big Show then came in and tried to take out Benoit, but Benoit was able to make the tag to Cena, who hit the Big Show with a steel chain, then hit the FU for the victory, making Cena & Benoit the sole 'survivors'.
On the next Smackdown, while Vince McMahon was out bragging about his victory over the Undertaker at the PPV, Cena came out and cut a rap, insulting the Chairman. It was later announced that Cena would face the Big Show in a "Hardcore" Match, with McMahon wanting the Big Show to take Cena out forever. It was a brutal match, featuring various weapons and shots. At one point, Cena tried for the FU, but collapsed, with the Big Show on top. Later on, Cena came back, using the ringsteps as a violent weapon to knock the Big Show out, then made the cover. A referee then ran down (the previous one had been ko'ed) and made the count, giving Cena the big victory. A week later, a 20-man Battle Royal was held to decide the #1 Contender to Brock Lesnar's World Title. Both Cena and Chris Benoit had to win qualifying matches to get in, then fight through the other wrestlers. In the end, though, it came down to Cena and Benoit, who both went over the ropes at the same time. It was ruled by GM Paul Heyman that the two men had to face in a deciding match the next week, with the winner to face Lesnar.
In the #1 Contenders Match, Cena and Benoit both gave it their all, as they both wanted the title shot later on in the night. Cena seemed to have gained it, as he caught Benoit with the FU and got the 3 count. But video footage showed that Benoit's foot was on the ropes, and the match was restarted. Cena was later distracted by the Big Show, which allowed Benoit to get the Crippler Crossface and force Cena to tap out, costing Cena the title shot. Cena feuded with the United States Champion for the rest of the year, including having a Battle Rap with him that ended with Cena kicking him low and leaving. The two wrestlers faced off at the Christmas In Iraq show, in a Non-Title Match. Cena won out by doing an incredible feat: getting the FU on the 500-pounder.
2004
On the first Smackdown of the year, GM Paul Heyman was talking about how great it was to honor the troops in Iraq. He was quickly interrupted, though, by Cena, who pointed out that Heyman didn't make the trip and was a coward. An angry Heyman then told Cena that, to get in the Royal Rumble, he would have to win a "Handicap" Match, with a partner of his choice against the FBI. Cena selected Chris Benoit, who had earlier been told by Heyman that he wouldn't get a shot at the Rumble. Cena & Benoit worked well as a team, even against superior numbers, and won when Benoit forced Johnny Stamboli to tap out to the Crippler Crossface. This earned both men one of the 15 Smackdown spots in the Rumble.
Cena continued to get under the skin of Paul Heyman as the pay-per-view approached, doing raps that insulted almost everything about the man, from his looks to the ECW past. This last part seemed to anger another man, though, as Rhyno took it upon himself to Gore Cena, protecting Heyman. This led Heyman to set up a "Loser Eats Soap" Match between the two wrestlers. It was a hardcore match, involving various tables around the ring. In the end, Rhyno missed a Gore, instead crashing into a set-up table in the corner. This stunned him long enough for Cena to get the FU, winning the match. Heyman then ran away, apparently not willing to eat soap. He was stopped by Chris Benoit, however, and brought back to the ring, where he was placed in the Sharpshooter by Benoit, while Cena got the soap. Cena then taunted the helpless Heyman, as everytime he said "Chris?", Benoit applied pressure. They eventually put the soap in Heyman's mouth, washing it out.
A week later, to get revenge, Heyman arranged for Cena & Benoit to fight Rhyno, Matt Morgan, Brock Lesnar, & the Big Show in a "Handicap" Match, with Heyman at ringside in a lifeguard chair to watch it all. Things got better for Cena & Benoit, though, when a forklift blocked the Big Show from being able to join the match. Later on, Lesnar ran from the ring after being attacked by Hardcore Holly, which basically made the match a tag-team affair. This finally gave the slight advantage to Cena & Benoit, as they continued to fight on. In the end, Cena was able to dodge a Gore from Rhyno and get the FU to win. After the match, Cena & Benoit started to go after Heyman again, but were both taken out by the returning Big Show, who had finally gotten free from his locker room.
At the '04 Royal Rumble, Cena came prepared to go all the way. He gave a rap beforehand, talking about how "These twenty-nine other guys, they can’t see me. Tonight, the Royal Rumble is going to be won by...". He was then interrupted by Rob Van Dam, who finished the line with "RVD". Cena got a very late draw in the Rumble, coming in at #28. Before he got in the ring, though, Cena found Nunzio, one of the FBI, hiding at ringside. Cena grabbed him and threw him into the ring, then came in and attacked the Big Show. Cena helped rally many of the wrestlers to attack the Big Show, and even got the Five Knuckle Shuffle on him, but even with all the talent in the ring, they couldn't get the 500-pounder over the ropes. Eventually, the Big Show managed to catch Cena and throw him over the top rope, sending Cena to the ground with a sickening-looking bending of his knee. Chris Benoit went on to win the match.
On the next Smackdown, since Benoit jumped to Raw for his World Title shot, Heyman set up a secondary Royal Rumble match, this time with the 15 Smackdown participants going at it to decide the #1 Contender. Hardcore Holly and Eddie Guerrero replaced Benoit and Matt Morgan (who was injured). There were concerns about Cena's knee as well, but Cena opted to compete, drawing a number for the battle royal. When Rhyno commented on possibly injuring Cena's knee worse, Cena responded by telling Heyman that Rhyno smelled terrible, and where was the soap? Cena came out in the mini-Rumble as entry #10, wearing a knee brace. He once again went right after the Big Show, as well as other wrestlers, including eliminating Nunzio. But Cena's momentum stopped when he reinjured the knee, keeping him grounded. The Big Show was then able to attack and eliminate Cena, booting him over the ropes. Cena got some revenge, however, as he joined in from the outside and helped the rest of the wrestlers involved eliminate the Big Show, ending his chances as well. Eddie Guerrero got the victory.
Cena later worked his way into the #1 Contenders Match at No Way Out '04, competing against Kurt Angle and the Big Show. The winner of the match would get the Smackdown World Champion at Wrestlemania 20. In the weeks leading up to the match, the three wrestlers had various altercations, including Angle laying out both Cena and the Big Show with a chair. At the pay-per-view, Cena started off the match simply watching from the corner, as Angle and the Big Show went at it. It eventually became a true Triple Threat Match, with all three wrestlers looking to get the pin, usually with the non-pinned opponent making the save. Cena landed another huge FU on the Big Show, but the pin was stopped by Angle, who knocked Cena out of the ring and got the Angle Slam on the Big Show for a 2 count. The Big Show later came back with Chokeslams, but again couldn't get the pin. As the match neared a conclusion, Cena went for the FU on Angle, but had his bad knee clipped by the Big Show. Angle then took out the Big Show and locked on a tighter version of the Ankle Lock on Cena's bad leg, forcing him to tap out.
On the very next Smackdown, Cena laid out a challenge to the Big Show for a Wrestlemania match for Show's United States Heavyweight Title, claiming that the champ had never beaten him. He also teamed with Kurt Angle to defeat the Basham Brothers in a solid match (with Angle turning heel later in the night in his feud with Eddie Guerrero). A week later, Cena & Rey Mysterio (who replaced Guerrero in the match) wrestled against the Big Show & Chavo Guerrero Jr. Cena's team won, with Mysterio pinning Guerrero after the 619. After the match, Chavo Guerrero Sr entered the ring and attacked Mysterio, but Cena intervened, hitting the FU on the veteran. However, this left Cena open to a clothesline from the Big Show, who then Chokeslammed Mysterio, followed by Cena. Going into March, Cena was placed in a match against the Big Show's ally, A-Train. Cena came through with the FU for the win, but also hurt his wrist, an injury that he would have to carry into the pay-per-view.
Cena and the Big Show finally had their long-built US Title Match at Wrestlemania XX. Cena seemed to have everything going for him going into the match, but he was facing a man who'd been nearly unstoppable for 5 months as the US Champion. The Big Show controlled the beginning of the match, using his size and strength to dominate the challenger. Cena had to fight out of several painful submission holds to keep in the match, dealing with both his injured wrist and his recovering knee. Cena finally got the momentum back in the match with a dropkick that sent the Big Show facefirst into the turnbuckle. Cena then got a huge FU on the 500-pounder, but Show kicked out at 2. A frustrated Cena then went for his chain, but was stopped by the referee. While the ref was getting rid of the chain, though, Cena slipped on another foreign object and clocked the champ with it. He then picked up the Big Show for a second FU, then pinned him, finally earning Cena his first WWE gold.
Cena didn't rest on his laurels after winning the belt. He defended it cleanly against Rhyno on the next Smackdown, winning with the FU. By now, Cena was becoming well-known for leaning over and 'pumping up' his sneakers before going for his finisher. He also routinely told people that "you can't see me!", waving his hand in front of his face. A little over a week after Wrestlemania, a Draft Lottery was held on Raw between the two shows, with several individuals going from one show to the other. During one draw by Smackdown GM Paul Heyman, Cena walked out, making his first appearance on Raw. He gave a quick rap, then made the draw for Heyman, pulling out Hunter Hearst Helmsley's name, shocking the Raw roster (Helmsley was quickly traded back to Raw within a week). On the following Smackdown, Cena again came out, this time 'welcoming' a Raw transfer, Rene Dupree, even offering him a bag of nuts.
A week later, Cena was one of the few 'nominees' for the Kurt Angle Great American award (Angle had taken over the GM spot for Smackdown). The winner of the award would be declared the #1 Contender. Cena defended the US Title that night, beating Danny Basham, and seemed to be Angle's reluctant pick for the award. But John Bradshaw Layfield interrupted, showing a video of himself stopping Mexican immigrants at the border. Angle thus awarded the #1 Contender spot to Layfield, screwing over Cena. The US Champ continued on, though, defeating Chavo Guerrero Jr (the Cruiserweight Champ) in a Non-Title Champions vs. Champions Match the next week. Near the end of April '04, during Rene Dupree's attempted French talk show segment, Cafe de Rene, Dupree threw wine into Torrie Wilson's face, then threatened to attack her. Cena ran down to make the save, then competed in a "Handicap" Match against Chavo Guerrero Jr & Sr. Due to interference from Dupree, though, Cena lost the match.
Cena saved Torrie Wilson again the next week, after she was placed in a "No Disqualification" Match with Dupree by Angle, who blamed Wilson for putting him in a wheelchair. When Dupree complained about Cena's involvement, Angle also placed some of the blame for his injury on rap music, and gave Dupree a US Title match against Cena at the next pay-per-view. Cena concentrated on other things, though, winning matches over Doug Basham and Sakoda heading towards Judgment Day '04. The match was a very competitive one, with Dupree giving Cena a real challenge for the US Title. Cena fought hard as well, though, at one point bloodying Dupree's mouth. Near the end, Cena went for the FU, but Dupree escaped, catching Cena with a neckbreaker and a close 2 count. After a couple more close falls, Cena caught Dupree with the FU and pinned him, winning the match and staying the champion.
Cena gave Dupree a rematch on the next Smackdown, and the two had another competitive bout. Unfortunately, it ended badly for Cena, as Dupree caught him with a low blow on the outside, then rolled into the ring while the ref made the count, giving Cena the countout loss. Another rematch was scheduled by Angle a week later, with Angle making it a "Lumberjack" Match between the two. Cena and Angle continued to have some heat between them, as Angle was angry about Cena's idea to give the next PPV to the American troops in Iraq for free. Cena and Dupree went on that night to another good match, with the heel lumberjacks, including an angry Booker T, attacking Cena and protecting Dupree. They couldn't protect him from Rico, though, who gave Dupree a kiss at one point in the match. Cena later got the FU and won the bout, winning the series over Dupree.
On the next Smackdown, Cena interrupted a Booker T interview, looking for some revenge because of Booker's actions in the Lumberjack match. As they argued, Kurt Angle and his bodyguard (Luther Reigns) came out, with Angle telling Cena that, because of 'controversy' regarding Cena's raps, he wanted Cena to leave the building. Before he could do anything, though, Booker T attacked, and the two wrestlers started brawling, with Angle first accidentally being hit from Cena when Booker T ducked a clothesline, then taking a chair shot to the leg by a badly-aimed Booker T swing. Angle then said that he was going to try to get the board of directors to strip Cena of the US Title. A week later, Angle came out and said he wanted an apology from both men. Booker T came out and quickly apologized (5 times), but Cena refused, saying that he was sorry for nothing.
A furious Angle then placed Cena in a "Triple Play" Match against Booker T, Rene Dupree, & Rob Van Dam, where the person who beat Cena would be given the title shot at the pay-per-view. However, despite each having 5 minutes, none of the wrestlers could pin Cena. When Dupree got an extra five minutes from Angle, Cena still managed to pin Dupree. A frustrated Angle decided then and there to make the match at the Great American Bash a Fatal Fourway Elimination Match between the wrestlers. Afterwards, Booker T & Dupree attacked Cena, with Van Dam helping to fend them off. RVD then signaled to Cena that he wanted the gold, while Cena showed that he'd rather keep it. Van Dam answered with a kick to the face, showing how serious he was about the title shot.
At The Great American Bash, Cena, Van Dam, Dupree, and Booker T all strived to prove that they were the most worthy to hold the United States Championship. There were no tags in or out, as all four men fought from the beginning in a tornado-tag style match, either fighting on the outside or going at it between the ropes. Near the middle of the match, Van Dam saw an opportunity and went for it, catching Booker T with the Five Star Frog Splash. But before Van Dam could recover from the blow, Cena grabbed him and rolled him up, pinning RVD and eliminating him. This led to some double-teaming from Booker T & Dupree, but they eventually broke apart, and after Booker T hit Cena with the Axe Kick, he turned and pinned a downed Dupree to eliminate him. Booker T then viciously attacked Cena, but the champ came back, dodging another Axe Kick and getting the FU to take care of Booker T and retain the US Title.
Cena made an appearance at the next Smackdown, interrupting the debut speech of the Japanese wrestler, Kenzo Suzuki. Cena made fun of Suzuki, 'translating' his speech into a variety of crazy things. Meanwhile, that night, Booker T won a #1 Contenders Match to get another shot at Cena's US Title. The two were set up to face off the next week, with Cena being attacked beforehand first by Suzuki, then by Luther Reigns. In the match, Reigns & Angle watched from ringside as the champ & the challenger went at it. Angle also became involved in the match, hitting Cena with a crutch at one point. In the end, during a fight on the outside, Angle was again accidentally knocked over by Cena during a melee. Cena then got Booker T back in the ring, dodged an Axe Kick, and got the FU, only to be attacked by Reigns, ending the match. Angle then told Reigns to leave with the US Title, saying that, since Cena had again laid his hands on him, Cena was stripped of the belt.
Cena confronted Angle a week later, demanding the belt back. When he grabbed Angle and lifted him out of the chair, Reigns attacked, only to be thrown through a wall by Cena. As punishment, Cena was put in a 3-on-1 Handicap Elimination Match against Booker T, Rene Dupree, & Kenzo Suzuki. Suzuki was eliminated first via DQ, when he choked Cena with a scarf. Cena later was able to roll up Dupree, taking him out as well. Just as Cena seemed to be coming back on Booker T, though, Reigns came down to the ring and attacked, rolling Cena back into the ring to allow Booker T to get the victory. Cena got some revenge on Reigns a week later in a match, winning after Booker T accidentally hit Reigns with the vacated US Title.
On the last Smackdown of July '04, Cena joined 7 other wrestlers in a brawl over who would get the vacated United States Title. The brawl was stopped by Vince McMahon and the new GM (Angle had been fired due to lying about his injuries), Theodore R. Long. Long set up an 8-man Elimination Match for the title that night. Charlie Haas was the first eliminated, as he was caught by Billy Gunn's Fameasser. Rene Dupree was next, being pinned after being taken out by Luther Reigns. Kenzo Suzuki was disqualifed for hitting Cena with the title belt. Cena came back from the hit to eliminate Gunn with the FU, then got another FU and pin on Reigns, making the final three Cena, Rob Van Dam, & Booker T. Cena & Van Dam went at it for a time, with RVD taking control of the tired former champ. But as Van Dam went for the Five Star Frog Splash, Booker T made the quiet tag, and rushed in after the Frog Splash landed, getting the pin on Cena. Booker T then jumped up and hit RVD with the Axe Kick, eliminating him as well to win the vacated US Title.
Cena was given another shot the next week, in a match against Van Dam to decide the #1 Contender for Booker T's belt. After a back-and-forth battle, Cena won out with a cradle pin. The two showed respect to each other after the match. A week later, Van Dam joined Cena & Charlie Haas in a "Summer Relay" Match against Booker T, Luther Reigns, and Rene Dupree. Cena ended up rolling up Booker T in the end for the victory. It was then set up by Theodore R. Long that Cena and Booker T would have a "Best Of 5" Series, with the winner getting the US Title. The first match was held at Summerslam '04, with the champion, Booker T, coming out strong early on. Just as Cena seemed to be in trouble, though, he surprised Booker T with an FU, getting the pinfall and winning the first match of the series.
Cena was bragging about the victory on the next Smackdown, when he was confronted by Spike & the Dudley Boyz. The three wrestlers proceeded to beat down Cena, leading to a match between Cena and D'Von Dudley later that night. Cena won handily, getting the FU to land, then talked smack to Booker T, who had come down to do ringside commentary. The two had the 2nd match of their series the next week on Smackdown, with Booker T winning after using the ropes during a roll-up pin. Booker T won Match 3 as well, which was held during the Australian Smackdown tour, by holding onto Cena's tights during a pin. This left Cena down 1-2, with two matches to go. After a few weeks of wrestling other matches, as well as being a Lumberjack for the Eddie Guerrero/Kurt Angle match (the bout ended in a No-Contest due to a brawl, followed by the Big Show returning to destroy everyone in the ring), Cena and Booker T had the 4th match in the middle of September '04, with Cena somehow kicking out after being clocked by the US Title, then getting the FU to even the series at two apiece.
At No Mercy '04, the fifth and deciding match of the series took place. Both men were deadly serious, fighting in and out of the ring to begin things. Booker T took control for a while, but miscued a kick, racking himself. The flow went back-and-forth from there, with Cena going for the FU, but being reversed into the Book End for a 2 count. A frustrated Booker T then went for a chair, but the referee stopped him from using it. He then tried an Axe Kick, but Cena dodged, then got the FU, winning the match and finally regaining his United States Title. On the next Smackdown, Cena came out to celebrate his win, as well as to rap insults about Michael Cole. He was interrupted, though, by the newest Smackdown star, Carlito Carribean Cool. After a heated discussion, Cool surprised Cena with a DDT, then spit an apple into his face. A match was set up for later that night, with Carlito shockingly knocking out Cena with his own chain, then pinning him, taking away the US Title after only a few days.
It was announced by GM Theodore R. Long on the next Smackdown that Cena had been stabbed during a bar fight during the week, and had a punctured kidney. In reality, Cena was off filming the movie "The Marine". Meanwhile, on Smackdown, Carlito Carribbean Cool was quickly becoming a suspect in the stabbing, as he admitted that he was in the bar, but said he left as soon as Cena came in. However, Cool's new 'bodyguard', Jesus Aguilera, was also in the bar, and could have possibly done the stabbing as well. Going into November '04, it was announced that, at the next PPV, a 4-on-4 Elimination Match would take place. The face team consisted of Eddie Guerrero, Rob Van Dam, Rey Mysterio, & the Big Show, while the heel team was composed of Cool, Kurt Angle, Luther Reigns, & Mark Jindrak. However, Mysterio was removed from the match due to being given a Cruiserweight Title shot. Guerrero quickly responded by announcing that John Cena would make his return as the 4th member, shocking Cool and the rest of his team.
At the '04 Survivor Series, Cena didn't waste any time looking for some revenge. When he came out for the Elimination Match, Cena quickly attacked Jesus, taking him out, then chased Carlito to the back, with Cool saying all the time that he wasn't the one who attacked him. Jesus tried to regroup, attacking Cena from behind, but Cena wouldn't be denied, taking him out. Cool then drove off in someone else's car, fleeing the arena and basically eliminating himself from the match. Cena then eventually made his way back to ringside, where the match had already begun. Angle's team tried to make up for the 4-on-3 disadvantage by working over Guerrero, but Guerrero managed to escape and tag in RVD. Van Dam scored his Five Star Frog Splash on Mark Jindrak, but was then rolled up by the legal man, Angle, bringing it to 3-on-3. This didn't last long, as Guerrero rolled up Jindrak to eliminate him as well. The Big Show took care of Luther Reigns with a chokeslam, leaving Angle against 3 men. Angle tried to leave, but was stopped by Van Dam, who sent him back to the ring, where the Big Show caught him and tossed him in. Cena then got the FU on Angle, followed by a Guerrero Frog Splash. The Big Show then made the cover, ending the match, with Cena, Guerrero, & Show 'surviving'.
Cena was given a rematch for the United States Title against Cool on the next Smackdown, with GM Theodore R. Long not letting Cool out of the match, despite x-rays that showed his shoulder injury. When the match began, Cena quickly took out Jesus on the outside, then viciously attacked Cool, even hitting his injured shoulder with a chair. After a quick domination in the ring, Cena got the FU on Cool and pinned him, becoming the 3-time US Champion. The celebration was short-lived, however, as Jesus attacked, aiming chair & chain shots into Cena's still-injured kidney area. Cena had to be taken out on a stretcher. Cena wouldn't return again for a few weeks, but it was announced by GM Long that Cena would defend the US Title against Jesus in a "Street Fight" at the next pay-per-view, Armageddon '04. The match was complete domination by Cena, despite the presence of the injured Cool, as Cena destroyed Jesus both in and out of the ring, finally taking him out with the FU and making the cover to stay the champ. Cena also reclaimed his chain, using it to knock out Cool before he left.
Cena changed up the United States Title on the next Smackdown, with a spinner in the center of it. Cena didn't actually appear on the show, though, except for a replay of the Street Fight Match from the PPV. Cena also didn't show up on the Christmas in Iraq show, presumably because he had been filming the Marine at the time the show was taped. On the final Smackdown of '04, Cena was part of the Champions Showcase, where all champions got to decide an opponent to defend their title against. Cena took on Rene Dupree, with the two rivals having a good match. Cena won out in the end, pumping up and getting the FU to stay the champ going into the new year.
2005
Cena started off '05 renewing his feud with Kenzo Suzuki. The two had a "Battle Rap" on the first Smackdown of the year, with Suzuki dressed up as Uncle Sam, continuing his 'I Love The USA' angle. Cena rapped back about both Suzuki and his wife, Hiroko, then brought out several divas, easily capturing Suzuki's attention. This led to Hiroko attacking one of the divas (Michelle), while Suzuki jumped Cena. The champ fought him off, though, clearing the ring. The next week, Cena and Suzuki squared off, with the US Title on the line. The match was a short one, as Cena quickly tore into Suzuki, then got the FU, pinning him 1-2-3. Cena wrestled the next week against Rene Dupree, beating him to gain a spot in the Royal Rumble match. Afterwards, though, Suzuki came down and attacked, ko'ing Cena and getting a measure of revenge. The two wrestlers faced off again the Smackdown before the PPV, with Cena again winning fairly easily.
At the '05 Royal Rumble, Cena continued his usual policy of getting in a confrontation with Raw wrestlers, this time griping with Christian while they chose their entry numbers for the main event. When Christian tried to out-rap him, Cena told him to choose his number for him, since he knew Christian liked balls. Cena entered the Rumble at #25, and immediately had a huge impact, back-dropping the 500-lb Viscera up and out. Cena later got a huge FU on Kane, sending another monster out of the ring. Cena later seemed to be working as a team with another Smackdown star, Rey Mysterio. This led to those two being in the Final Four, along with Batista and Edge. Mysterio was eliminated by a Spear from Edge, but Cena got revenge for him, throwing Edge out to make it Cena vs. Batista. Cena went for the FU on Batista, but had it blocked. Batista then went for the Batista Bomb, but Cena held on, and the two men toppled over the ropes at the same time! After some confusion about who won, Vince McMahon came out and restarted the match. Cena then went for the FU again, but Batista got a huge Spinebuster instead, then tossed Cena out, winning the Rumble. Cena had to watch from the outside, coming oh so close to getting the title shot only to come up short.
