Steve Bruce is monitoring Glen Johnson's situation at Chelsea after admitting he aims to sign "two or three" new players in January.

Bruce has pinpointed his defence as the main area he wants to bolster during the January transfer window - and is looking at right-back in particular following Mario Melchiot's indifferent start to the season.

Johnson is hardly getting a look-in at Stamford Bridge, playing second fiddle to Portuguese full-back Paulo Ferreira, so would jump at the offer of first-team football at St Andrews.

Chelsea splashed out £6m to lure 21-year-old Johnson from West Ham, so would be looking to recoup around half of that transfer fee.

A £3m bid is well within Bruce's price range, but the Blues boss aims to be busy in the New Year, with an approach for Austrian international Paul Scharner, who plays for Brann Bergen and would cost around £2m, also in the offing.

The Blues chief, whose troops lie 15th in the Premiership and just one point above the dropzone, said: "I'm keen on bringing in a few players. I'm looking at two or three and hopefully we will be bringing players in during the transfer window."

Bruce added: "We are definitely looking at Scharner. He is a fantastic player. We're trying to negotiate but at the moment that hasn't been easy.

"With Kenny Cunningham out of contract in the summer - and he will make his own mind up about what he wants to do - we need to address that part of the team."

Alan Curbishley's Charlton have knocked the holders Chelsea out of the Carling Cup after a penalty shootout.

The teams fought out a 1-1 draw after extra-time at Stamford Bridge, with John Terry heading Chelsea into the lead, before Darren Bent equalised.

Charlton goalkeeper Stephan Andersen saved a Robert Huth penalty while the rest of the Addicks all scored to earn a 5-4 win on penalties.

Newcastle captain Alan Shearer scored a late goal in a 1-0 win at Grimsby Town in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Shearer struck with ten minutes to play to spare the blushes of the Premiership side, who fielded a strong side.

Birmingham needed a late goal by midfielder Jiri Jarosik to beat Norwich 2-1 at St Andrews, Jared Borgetti scored the only goal as Bolton beat West Ham 1-0 at the Reebok Stadium and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scored Middlesbrough's goal in a 1-0 win at Everton.

League Two strugglers Barnet had goalkeeper Ross Flitney sent off after only three minutes against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Substitute Scott Tynan came on for Barnet but he could not prevent a 4-1 defeat, with goals by Liam Miller, Kieran Richardson, Guiseppe Rossi and Sylvain Ebanks-Blake. Dean Sinclair grabbed Barnet's consolation.

Nils-Eric Johansson scored for Leicester in a 1-0 win at Cardiff.
