In my school days, we had ruthless teachers who used to cane the not-so-intelligent kids so hard they even had names for their canes. If you nipped into the staff room you would find them practising their trade on some poor kid, or while straddling the corridors, you would hear people screaming and sure enough they were getting so, called medicine! One day my brother, Victor, who was in the year ahead of me did not do his homework. He came up with some home-related excuse. Unluckily for him, his teacher sent someone to get me. On reaching Victor’s class I was asked the reason and innocently said he had been helping my dad push his car! Little did I know he had come up with a different elaborate excuse.
Everyone laughed, even those who had just received a thorough beating. I avoided my brother the whole week.
