I could've called this post 'new New Order single', but that confused me way too much.

I thought I'd do a little bio of the group before I do anything else, since alot of people here weren't actually born during New Order's glory days. I myself was barely a few months old when they were formed! :D

So, you want to symbolise decades with music-changing bands? You got your whole Mo Town scene for the 60's; Jimi Hendrix, Bowie and co. for the 70's, and then you have The Smiths, Happy Mondays, Joy Division, New Order and their ilk for the 80's.

Sure, the 80's had Wham, Duran Duran and other such pop-oriented bands, but the real talent of the era was found by Anthony Wilson (he of ocassional regional Manchester TV fame :)) in the eartly 80's.

Now this isn't a band bio. so I won't go into mega detail about the era, other than cutting-edge pop-rock was taking over in a mass underground/club movement during the whole of the 80's.

Bands like Wham had the real chart success, but beneath the surface, some truly awesome acts were gradually getting the publicity they fully deserved. New Order were formed in the midst of this and soon became one of the fore-runners of this mini revolution of pop music.
And, boy, they were good! :)

So it was with great pleasure that I saw the return of lead singer Bernard Summer and co. for a new New Order (dammit! I *knew* I'd say that eventually! :P ) album last month.

Their last effort was Get Ready back in 2002. A big hit in the sales charts, but met with mixed reactions from New Order fans of old who, quite rightly, expected better. Of course, did they get that from this new album (Waiting For The Siren's Call)?
Hmmm...no.
Sadly they didn't once again. I think New Order can join the growing list of great bands that probably will never fully replicate the phenominal class of their previous albums again, eg. Feeder, Morrissey and Oasis to name but 3 of many.

But we can't dwell on the past, so what the new album does bring to the pitch is basically a blend of entertaining background pop-rock songs. Some are good by today's pop/rock standards, but for callsic New Order, they're a dissapointment.

To quote the conversation I had with my brother (who's followed the band since the 80's and was the main reason I grew to like them) after hearing the whole album for the first time a few weeks ago:
Me: What did ya think of New Order's new album then?
Brother: Crap!
Me: Hmmm...Krafty's good though..
Brother: It's alright, but it's...*shakes head*..I forget the exact words, but I do remember it was basically that it was nothing compared to older New Order tracks.

Personally, I don't think this new album is that bad. It's a good stand-alone album with some trademark New Order great guitars and great lyrics, it's just dissapointing compared to some of the classic albums of old.

Which of course, brings me on to Krafty, New Order's first single off the new album.

While the main backing beat sounds reminiscant of an old Blink 182 song rather strangely, it is super-additctive, a song I can picture myself listening to while in the car going to work. It even has the appropriate lyrics as you'll read later. :D

Having listened to the album, this is by far the best track on it. It's elevated quite a way above the rest of the tracks, so rest assured, this one is a worthy buy! It's very pop-friendly, and contains all the pop familiarities of a catchy tune, it's simple but fun! It also adds a soft rock chorus and Sumner's own blend of great lyrics and soothing vocal sound.
