The night began with Pigs in Zen. Named after a Janes Addiction song, their influence is worn on their sleeve. This said, they produced a genuine and impressive sound all of their own. Smacked of early Janes Addiction mating with a childhood herd of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Pearl Jam on speed balls playing a Roman Colloseaum; you know what I mean. Each member commanded the attention of the growing crowd, being an exciting visual band, hair flailing and instruments pounded. Fast-funk-grunge; technical beyond their years, I can see Pig's taking what is considered a dead genre well into the 21st Century.
Elliot WhaleBoy. Where do I start? Judging by the surging influx of humans immediately prior to their taking the stage, it would be safe to assume this new band were to be the highlight of an impressive line up. Clean and understated rock steeped in ecstatic cross genre confidence. Beautiful soundscapes unafraid of pigeonholing, but devoid of it. Like early At The Drive In on valium. Maybe shacked up with Queens of the Stone Age in ten years time? Wonderfully structured songs, with an almost drum and bass back bone coming from the stripped down kit. Astonishing uplifting, engaging stuff. Half an hour dissapeared in a positive and more than enjoyable five songs.
Could this indeed be the future of pop?
The crowd had thinned by the time Grifters drum kit had been set up, and this fell in retrospect to a mistake by the promotors line up. (f***ing drum kits...) As ordered a well versed old school stoner metal. Ploughing a familiar furrow, though with a humbling command of a genre so horribly watered down in these parts. Their whiskey fuelled juggernaut sound is impressive from a three peice; Ollie growling over those massive drum beats. Grifter are a biker bar in an earthquake. Heavy, pounding and uncompromising metal which indulged and entertained in just the right ratio. Gotta admit, f***ing loved it.
So it fell to Serenity to headline the slowly emptying Tramps. (Seems a curse these days to headline locally, seems people would rather repeat the entrance fee somewhere else to listen to a DJ play the same Alt/Metal/Punk tunes they have been churning out for months.) Now drummerless, and with Rusty of Quarantine filling in; Serenity started with a faltering explanation of this (If you are a drummer and like serenity, please contact us.) and a shaky version of an old song. Then settled though, they began upping the tempo and enthusiasm to what we have come to expect from the Prog Rock Metal whirlwind that their live shows can be. A great set, well balanced with old and new songs played with a confidence and passion that you can't help but get involved in. By now drunk, the small crowd absorbed the energy and plain rocked out; Jennings the front man snapped some strings and stalked out into the crowd toward the end of the night and belted his guitar like a maniac; just for us.
Simply a great night of music and beer.
Take it easy till next time.
