Steel Rules Die

With a track record that's to die for, Ricky and David (ex Anthem of the Century), Stu (ex Nerves) and Andy (ex 67th Morning) formed Steel Rules Die late in the winter of 2001, building on their considerable experiences to skilfully combine their love of hardcore with all-important melody, in the vein of classic bands like Lifetime, Hot Water Music, Avail, Reach The Sky and Dag Nasty.

Their growing reputation has already seen them successfully tour the UK and support bands such as Strike Anywhere, As Friends Rust, Grade and Agnostic Front. 'Nostalgia for Beginners' is their debut release and is on much respected UK independent label In At The Deep End Records. These eight songs bristle with energy, passion and desire, tearing the heartstrings and the vocal chords at the same time as one chorus builds into another.

With this release Steel Rules Die have upped the ante, taking the quality of UK hardcore to new levels. The touch paper has been lit, stand back and watch this band fly. Steel Rules Die released 'The Hemingway Solution' the full length follow up to Nostalgia on Reflection Records April 2004.

Interview

How long have you guys been together?

We've just passed our 3rd anniversary of starting the band - it was an emotional moment. In that time we've released a split, an 8 song EP and our recent full length album, The Hemingway Solution on Reflections Records.

How did you meet?

Through a fetish website. No, it was mainly through playing in other bands and just being friends. We wanted to play music together, but we had very little 'plan' other than that.

What are your musical influences

Our influences are as wide as they are varied. Generally speaking, we love passionate music that wears its heart on its sleeve and isnt afraid to rock. From Bruce Springsteen to the Cure, from Hot Water Music to Superchunk and early Madonna.

How did you come up with your bands name?

It is the name of a factory in Nottingham and we needed a name desperatley. Its recently shut down actually maybe thats an omen!

What are your plans for touring this year?

Were heading to Europe with a German band called KJU in May and after that we'll be playing extensively around the UK before recording. Come along!

Which band at the moment that has made it big over the last year do you respect the most?

I'm not sure there is anyone that I would have massive respect for specifically. A lot of bands deserve to be big, only some never achieve it, thats the nature of the business and of life in general. I guess I just respect anyone that works hard, and doesnt forget the people around them. I know the Funeral For A Friend guys have made it big and are still very cool, as well as talented, so I guess I'd have to say them.

How would you describe your music to someone?

I hate describing my band I have to admit. Especially to people who are not aware of anything heavier than McFly. If I had to, I’d say, melodic, yet aggressive punky-rock.

Which is the best venue you have played at?

It’d have to be Manchester Academy with AFI, which beats Den Bosch in Holland just.

Describe to us what you do on a 'normal' day?

Normally, you’ll find me working as a writer at Saatchi & Saatchi in London and or in the pub.

Can you let us in on any secrets as to what the future holds for your band?

World domination, but don’t tell anyone. Maybe even achieve world peace like Wild Stallions. In the meantime though, expect to see a new SRD album later this year with lots of musical surprises.
