Touching The Void was on Channel 4 at 9 last night, I had seen it before on video but I had to watch it again, as it was just an amazing film.
It was a documentary film of a mountaineering tragedy that happened almost two decades ago, there was no actual footage of the event. It's a gripping outdoor adventure and the movies is the most inspiring epic survival story in years.
The film tells the tale of how, in 1985, Joe Simpson and his fellow-Brit climbing partner, Simon Yates, set out to be the first to scale Siula Grande, a 21,000-foot peak in the Peruvian Andes.
After three and a half days ascent up the mountain, Simpson falls and brakes his leg in several places, which, since the pair were climbing alpine style, without base camps and only the supplies they could carry on their backs amounted to a death sentence.
The rest of the movie shows one complication after another, Yates cuts Simpson loose and leaves him for dead, and Simpson has to struggle out of this most impossible dilemma.
It truly is an amazing film, which shows courage and strenght and if you managed to miss it last night then I strongly suggest you go and hire it out or watch it on Film 4 where it is being showed pretty much every night at the moment.
