Let Them Eat Gak! @ Rhythm Factory Review
Sidestep your Tuesday night routine at home with the telly and head to Whitechapel Road where Rhythm Factory organises Let Them Eat Gak every Tuesday to showcase new alternative bands.
From 8.30 onwards, expect to pay £3 to be hushed into the back of this strictly no frills café and bar although you can bring your kebabs and drink beer from a plastic cup while you lounge on sofas.
It wasn’t till 9 that the gig got going and The Quirky exploded on scene. Under the dim light, Zee, Tim, Brian and Mike sang and played about the sad things in the world while Zee entertained us with her antics. The Quirky is well, quirky with a metal edge gunning to record an album this year on the lines of anti-war and anti-establishment.
Orchard Hill played next, to introduce us to their part rock, part folk sounds with songs like On Your Feet and On A Hook. Damien, Sean, Daniel and Ali take credit for this band and we did love Damien’s harmonica and how it brought a folksy sound to the beat.
Something Like Fire brought their entourage and what an entourage it was that lighted the small floor. Their unique sound hints at rock and hip-hop and indie but this is one band that seems to be breaking the boundaries of their music. The crowd went from swimming with dolphins to Cry Wolf which is due to be out in September to My Shadow with Michael, Rich, Max, James and Joel.
Andy, Alf, Scott, Kurt and Dan from Kite Season closed the night with a final round of quirky, indie music with a hint of tambourine folk and large chunk of heavy gritty metal observations of the our everyday miseries. Definitely heavy on your ears but this is a band that is looking to break your idea of genre.
There are no watermelon martinis here and lighting is sparse, but if you want to support home grown alternative music, come here on Tuesdays.
